Me and my big mouth!!!
I have invited two ladies where I work to call in after work tomorrow for some nibbles and a glass of wine.
Trouble is I am not blessed with a big budget or much time as I am working flat out and doing exams at the moment (as well as juggling family and young children).
Do any of you lovely peeps have any ideas that are quick and tasty and that won't break the bank? I would love you forever if you have!!
Ta ever so!!!

Not sure what kid of thing you're after, but mayeb some nuts, crisps etc, or even some cheese and crackers? If you want something a bit posher, Delia Smith does a great recipe with some tiny bruschetta topped with a bit of soft goats cheese, a little blob of pesto and some finely diced tomatoes. If you buy the bruschettas and pesto, these are so quick to make and whenever I've made them, there's never been any left. Alternatively you can make the brushettas so easily with a thinly sliced baguette, brushed with a little oil and baked until crisp - a 40p baguette will give you loads more than you'll need. For variety, you could maybe do some topped with some pate and a bit of tomato and cucumber? For nibbles, how things look is possibly even more important that the taste lol
If you want something sweet, then what about some tiny homemade scones? I have a little cutter that's about an inch, inch and a half across. For parties, I make tiny scones and then split them and top them with jam and a little blob of cream. If I'm going really posh then I'll put half a strawberry on too, but it's not necessary. Again, these are something that everyone loves and the tiny quantities means that the cost is fairly negligable, and they really don't take much time.0 -
Hi Jennie,
How about making a pizza if time permits? You could make the dough beforehand and get the toppings ready and then just assemble it all at the last minute and have it ready to come out of the oven when they arrive. I just put mozzarella cheese and tomato puree mixed with olive oil and herbs on mine.
Are they bringing a bottle? You could spin out wine by making spritzers or a jugful of sangria (red wine and orange juice)

TBH if it's red wine you could get away with just a couple of nice cheeses and some crackers - whatever's on offer in your local supermarket.
For white wine olives are nice0 -
I have a friend who introduced me to the following:
get some puff pastry (bought of course) roll it out to be a square shape, spread with Marmite, or tinned anchovies mashed up, then roll the whole thing up like a long sausage. Then slice into 1/2 cm 'whorls' and bake (quite spaced apart) on a baking tray. Even people who hate Marmite like these as they are savoury without it being possible to identify what is in them. I think I once put bits of salami in them too but it was hard to slice nicely.
Tho I'd probably do cheese and biscuits as you have a lot of other things to be doing, with a platter of nice fruit cut up into eatable size chunks , with cocktail sticks. Good luck !0 -
How about a nice pate to go with the cheese & biccys - almost zero prep time unless you make your own! maybe a few grapes to go with that tooI THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0

If you are near a Lidl they do lovely little tins of nuts, from memory almonds, cashews and macadamia. WOuld cost a fortune in Asda/Tesco but they are really reasonable and gorgeous.0

Tin of tuna mashed up (or liquidised) with two tablespoons of sandwich spread
on slices of buttered french stick and it tastes just like salmon pate. Stick half an olive on top and they wont know the difference!!!0 -
seashore, by sandwich spread, do you mean butter or marg or the like?
Sandwich spread sounds quite posh.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0
