Is a partner entitled to a % of your home

Quick question :)

If the house is purchased in your name, your name on the mortgauge, your name on the main household bills would the girlfriend be entitled to a certain % of the home if in the event of a split if she has contributed towards bills etc

Cheers as i have no idea and have heard some horror stories which i dont know are true?

Cheers Dean

If she has contributed or been looking after the kids then its likely she will be able to claim for upto half (maybe more if you have kids)

    No kids,

I have been told that if she has lived with you for more than a year and has helped contribute towards bills she is entitled to part of the home.

    Whats the deal?

There is nothing clear cut in the law that states this. If you were to split up, it would depend on a lot of things - how you split the finances, what she put into the house in terms of energy, work etc. It's one for the solicitors, I'm afraid.

The person moving into the property would have to show 'beneficial interest' which is very difficult to prove. Would definately need a solicitor for this. They would have to show how their money directly contributed towards the upkeep of the property ie did the mortgage payment come out of their account or did they only pay for DIY. If only paid towards the bills then no beneficial interest. The only way that balance of power would shift is if there were any children of the relationship. Then obviously their needs would be considered under Family Law should the relationship break down.

Hi , the answer to your question is NO , shes not entitled to any of the proceeds from the sale.. Its your property so would be up to you if you wanted to give her anything... As "Common Law Wife " she has very few entitlements.. as already stated.. would be different if there were children involved..........

Thanks Bossyboots, this site is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. My brother-in-law's relationship with his fiancee has just broken down - and it's VERY complicated so I won't hijack the OP's post here. Hopefully, if I get time tonight, I'll post on the "relationships" board. Thanks again for an excellent link.
