hi just joined here but seems a very good site for info.
my question is i pay the csa 225 pounds a month and my monthly take home pay is 890 pounds a lot of people have said this sounds high i have another child with my new wife plus she also has a daughter from previously.
when i contact the csa they just say it is right and i should cut back but im now getting deeper into debt.

How much you pay depends on when you were first assessed.

New rules apply from 2003 and these will only be used for previously assesed people when they get these new rules working for new clients.

With the old rules it sounds about right to me it usually came in around 25% (as a rough rule of thumb) of the take home pay for most people.

I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

unless you have a particularly high mortgage/rent to pay, this does sound about the right amount to pay child support.
i am assuming you are under cs1 as are most.
you can try to change a variable, and then be reassessed, this can make a large difference or none, but there is a very good calculator/spreadsheet to download from the internet. if you need more details. feel free to pm me.

thanks muchly but i meant a non biased spreadsheet :)

and the best i know of was made by a man called barry pearson.

dont know if i can put the web site addy up, so just try the combination of csa and barrys full name. he has a few sites, but only one about csa.

edited to put site addy in

sorry to dissapoint ted, but barry did this spreadsheet himself, and it is far more accurate than csa's own.

for others, the spreadsheet is in the dowloads section.

please if you are having problems with the csa, have a good look round barrys site and  follow the links to a few other sites. then most of your questions will be answered.

  • Try clicking my link again and scrolling to the bottom of the page of the page you get to and see who the author is ;)

You can put links to other sites if they contain useful relevant information. I'm sure if you do you will see that it leads to the same spreadsheet from http://www.childsupportanalysis.co.uk/

  • i understand that previously it was thought that the agency often got calculations incorrect and this was the case in many cases a lot of the time the problem was that as it took so long to calculate the assessment the information that had been provided was no longer current - now under the new rules it is much simpler to calculate an assessment and identify any problems with the liability which can then be fixed. The calculator on the child support website is extremely accurate and as ted says provides the actual amounts - at the end of the day doesnt take much to work out the correct % of ure net wage allowing the appropriate allowance for shared care good luck to the origional poster

the csa still get many thousands of calculations wrong every day.
because hardly anyone is on the new system yet.

of those that are on the new sytem, over 10,000 are still waiting for an assessment.

all the millions (of people) that are on the old system, will stay there until the new system works correctly

or in other words dont hold your breath.

the csa own calculator may be extremly good for any person on the new system, but have you tried to use it for the old system?

  • Just give up working and you will only have to pay £5 no matter how much Is or JSA you have. My Ex even lives with a woman who earns £20,000 and can still claim all benefits and not pay more than £5 towards his 2 preschool children. The CSA are aware of the facts and tell me its not their problem? >:(

Any suggestions welcome, though any suggestin shotguns already considered and rejected for sake of children.... shame he cant put them first!
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.
