Faulty TV Warranty Query, please help

Hi all,
I've got what was an expensive 32" Samsung widescreen TV that has a fault. The picture, although it's supposed to be pure-black, sometimes has grey instead of black. However, here's the catch, this started literally 1 day before my warranty (12 month) ended on the 1st of January this year. Currys did a wonderful job of fobbing me off that day and the day after and so I tried getting support out of warranty, technically. No joy there.
I've read before that the UK hasd product standards and expected lifespans for products. If a product fails within that time it reflects a manufacturing or quality issue, given normal wear and tear.
The TV has had under 48 hours of actual in-use time. Scarey I know.
Questions is, do I have any chance of getting Samsung to deal with this issue as 6 months with Currys has done nothing for me!?
Thanks for any advice,
Dre

I read somewhere else in these forums regarding extended warrenties etc and that if the product fails after a reasonable amount of time after your manufacturer guarentee runs out very much the way you have described then the manufacturer has a duty to repair it. I.e. if the product was unfit for the purpose of the sale etc..ummm...0

A warranty is an add on to your rights under THE SALE OF GOODS ACT and cannot take them away,a product has to be of merchantable quality, as described and fit for purpose, this t.v semms to fail on all counts, the retailer is responsible not the manufacturer,so go back to them quoting the Sale of Goods act and if no joy go to Trading standards for further advice and if neccassary take them through the small claims courtDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Derrick is spot on!
Currys are responsible. They know they are in the wrong and are trying to fob you off! An expensive TV should not go wrong at 24 or 36 months never mind 12. Go back to Curry's and insist that they either fix or replace it.
The warranty of a year is irrelevant! Take them to court if they don't and don't buy expensive stuff from Currys or Dixons again! Their customer service is rubbish!Keep SmilingSite member number 24

If the fault is in-herent then I beleive you have up to 6 years. Would definately go back to the store and see the manager. Currys are not always as un-helpful as some seem. Just approach it the right way. Try contacting Mastercare who are the repairers!0

Did you buy it with a credit card, if so take it up with them as they are as liable for any problems as the retailer (Consumer Credit Act), although the front line staff will probably deny it.
I had a problem with a monitor just over 12 months old, bought from PC World (like Currys, part of the DSG group). They would not help at all in store and told me to phone their head office. As I could not be bothered geting fobbed off by them, I wrote to the credit card company and explained that I had tried to deal with the store, but they were not interested, therefore I was dealing with them. A couple of phone calls and a letter with a copy of the receipt resulted in a full refund (which was probably charged back to PC World).0 -
Apologies for the delays in getting back in touch with everyone. Many thanks for all of the advice.
I will persue this with Currys initially again and then with my CC company and the manufacturer if no joy is had there.
I've already mailed the manufacturer to see if this is a known fault as I feel that would set me off with a good foot forward.
Thanks again,
Dre... and that's all I have to say about that.0 -
I have a grundig tv from currys which packed up 1 week after the warranty expired. After checking with Which! magazine I was told to ring the manager of the shop and tell them that according to the sale of goods act an item should last a reasonable amount of time, not 1 year, and it was the retailers responsibility to replace or repair the product. If he refuses tell him you will contact trading standards and his head office. This worked for me and an engineer came out the next day.0
