can you drive when you've lost your driving licence?

Hi, almost a week ago I lost my wallet after coming out of work and it had my provisional driving licence (the plastic card with photograph) in it. I have since sent away the paper part of my licence along with fee to the licencing authority and been on the phone with them about getting a new one which I think I should receive in the next 10 days. I am currently taking driving lessons with a professional instructor before my test and wondered is it okay to continue as normal even tho I have lost my licence and just wait for the duplicate to arrive?

Your Instructor should have taken details of your licence, so I doubt there would be a problem with lessons, however you will of course need your licence to sit your Driving Test.

  • Thanks everyone, I will assume its fine then and yea my instructor has my licence details, as do I. I don't see why I would no longer be licenced to drive so it should be sweet. Furthermore, they told me to write a cover letter with the new application (which I did) saying that I had my test soon and they would ensure they had the new one back to me by then. I sent it by recorded delivery and it has came up as delivered so it shouldn't be long now :), thanks everyone!

I'm not sure about while you're learning but after you pass your test you have to send both parts away so for a couple of weeks you have no license to show at all & can still drive.

Inactive is right too, my instructors both took details of my license for their records.

Don't worry it's not something you'll get arrested for ;)

You'll not be able to take your test until you've got the replacement as you will be asked to produce it by the examiner.

    How disappointing.

I read the title and was looking forward to some good old fashioned MSE ranting about how the OP was a dangerous nutter for thinking that he could drive when he had been banned.

Turns out he's mislaid it. No fun at all.

in fairness driving after you have been banned isnt dangerous, just illegal though you may be a dangerous driver which caused you to get banned.
