Best place to buy an engangement ring.

Hi there,

My gf (whoes in early stages of pregnancy) and I are thinking of getting married as we would probably sooner or later anyways, so nows as good time as any time.

She loves the idea of an engagement ring so I will do anything to make her happy. We had a look at the argos book and also the hs samuels website. Probably I will spend at least £500-600 so has any one any ideas of the best place who do good quality rings at good prices. I think I saw something about 1 carrot rings (im totally ignorant on these things)

some advice gratefully accepted.

thanks

:)

    Try Gardners in Belfast

Not a jeweller but I'd say a 1 carrot ring ... probably about £10K+ & probably not in most peoples budget

General rule of thumb I worked to, was that the engagement ring should be anywhere between 1 - 2 months salary

Isn't Gardners a wholesaler? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

Anyway, I would avoid Lunns as they are exorbitent. Try a smaller jeweller like Joseph Rea or Farmers on the Woodstock Road, assuming you are near Belfast. If well outside Belfast, tell us what area and someone with local knowledge will help I'm sure.

    Congratulations by the way!

Give Enlanders in Cornmarket a chance - describe what you want & ask him if ne can get for you. Don't be afraid to ask for "your best price" jewellers can normally drop 15%.
    Good luck with everything

just a thought (and i'm not a mum so can't be sure about these things) but perhaps getting an expensive ring while your fiance is pregnant might not be such a great idea as i have heard that your fingers can swell up when you're pregnant? she might end up having to have the ring re-sized if it gets bought when her fingers are bigger than they might normally be, or else if you buy it now and her fingers swell later, it might get stuck and be painful or else she won't be able to wear it anyway...

but anyway, congratulations on both counts (baby and engagement) and may i throw mcneilly's just off castle st in belfast into the mix as i think they also have second hand jewellery which can get you more bang for your buck.
  • You are better to go for a single stone. I wouldn't use any of the catalogues. Gardners is a wholesale jewellers and if you can get a card from someone to get you in this would be a good place to buy.

  • I got my solitaire in Goldsmiths if thats any help.

I would agree with the advice though about fingers swelling, might be better to wait for a while?
  • I have to vote for Gardeners as well. We got engagement rings and wedding rings from there. Great value and excellent service. The guys in there seem to know what they are talking about and will spend all the time you need with you.

Trust me I know naff all about jewelery, but was more than comfortable dealing with these people.

I got mine in Ernest Jones.

You know if you get one of the management to serve you and you dither about buying the ring (or even just ask) they can give discount off the price. Only managers can do this though.

My mum got something in Gardners once but you need to get someone with a card as its a wholesalers.

  • Hi again, thanks for all replies. This Gardeners place that requires a card, wonder how you can pick one of them up. Do they only issue cards to someone who is a retailer of jewellery and I'd have to get a card from them?

    thanks again
