Looking for a flat to rent in Edinburgh near City centre

Hi,
I am currently living in Belfast and I will be relocating to Edinburgh next month. I am looking for a flat closer to city centre and the prices are sooooo high compared to Belfast. What are the normal rental rates in Edin’? For a one bedroom flat in Leith walk, the price is 550.00GBP and above…What are the areas to look for that are not too far from the city centre yet affordable?

I will be very grateful for any help!

  • I am moving to Edinburgh at the end of the month too!! but I have lived there before so prob a little easier for me!! The website I look at a lot is www.lettingweb.com it always has a lot of flats on it - search by post code EH7 which seaches leith walk, leith, meadowbank, broughton etc all great places to live and with easy access to the city centre by foot or bus. There are quite a few 1-bedders on that for 450 - 500 pcm. Also check out edinburgh gumtree if you havent already which is mostly private landlords so prices are a little lower and may not have the need for expensive credit checks. Also have a look at www.citylets.co.uk again there are a number of cheaper one bedders on there - just search by Edinburgh East if that is the kind of area you want to live in (my choice by a mile!) Good luck!:j

Hi m8 i live in Edinburgh and its easy at the moment to find letting property. The area you choose should depend on where you will be working for ease of comuting.
The places mentioned above or try the ESPC.
If you need any advice on location let me know and I'll try to help. ;-)

There are a lot of places in the North of Edinburgh which is my preference.
Prices range from £400 to ....well anything really.

Thanks very much for your replies. I will be working near Fettes Road and so, ideally looking for a flat near Leith walk or Princess street.
When I contact the letting agents, they say that they will hold the flat for 15 days only. As I will be moving to Edinburgh on the 17th Nov, is it ideal to look for a flat 15 days before that...may be during 1st week of nov??

As I have an 18 months old baby, I really cannot take chances and so, I need to find a suitable house before moving to Edin'
So, kindly advise me on this.

m8 if you are working at Fettes then take a look at flats at "The Strada" just up the road.
They are new built (I wouldn't buy one with your money) and there are lots for rent. They are good rental properties. The area is good. I think a 2 bed is about £600.
A stroll to your work and a bit further (but not much) To Stockbridge. The centre of town is a 20 minute walk or a short bus trip.

A couple here to look at. I would try a haggle cos there are a lot of people trying to Let these so they may take a lower offer.

Fettes Road? You mean Fettes Row?? Im currently renting a one-bed in Edinburgh and its great, moved here couple of months ago. I was also looking to rent around Fettes Row (assuming thats what you mean but nvm) as I thought that's where my office is going to be - tho it turned out that I was located in one of the other offices in Edinburgh. Anyway I found flat prices around Fettes Row to be high, its a very nice area!

Are you planning on coming to Edinburgh to look for a flat before you move?? I highly recommend it, I took 3 days looking around 12 flats before I made my decision. Some photos dont quite match the agency website's!! Anyway it'll be good as you can get a general feel of the area. When I was looking around on the net and looking on googlemaps, I thought some areas were far too far away from the centre for my liking. But actually I found the bus service to be so good and cheap, that I started looking further around and eventually got myself a nice flat in Gorgie paying just under 500pcm. And on contrary to what some people may say, im loving the area and its a popular area!! I'd avoid Gorgie road flats though. Thats the main road. I'd look for one of the roads that go off Gorgie road (like mine). Flats here can be found from £425 onwards for a one bed, but do check the quality of the furnishings (only reason Im paying much above that)!

Leith Walk area is also very nice. But rather on a higher price side and only saw couple of flats there (I was aiming under £500). Again, good bus link - essential for climbing up the hill with your child that leads you to Princes Street - the city centre!

And fyi, I secure my flat 4 weeks before moving in date - most agents were happy with this! i recommend Lettingweb and Rightmove for searching btw.

Edinburgh is also officially the best place to live 2007 - according to Location location location by Channel 4!
