Flavour and quality or cost?

Options
Having discovered a new local farm shop very near to me I have not bought any meat elsewhere since it opened.

The meat is all free range with no additives. The butcher in the shop will cut you exactly the piece you want.

The taste is absolutely wonderful.

The cost however, is more than I would pay for the same size chicken or cut of other meat in the likes of the big supermarkets.

Although not exactly moneysaving - I've gone for taste over cost.

The manager of the shop says all the produce (including lots of other things besides meat) is as near to organic as he can get it without being allowed to advertise it as such.

Of course not everyone can choose taste over cost - but if you can afford it - do you?

Absolutely! Cheap washing powder, loo rolls etc but butter not marge, organic as much as possible and fresh rather than frozen.

Veg in our organic box or from the garden is so different to the supermarket version. Supermarket tomatoes, celery and carrots just have no flavour compared to the home/farm grown.

    Absolutely!!!

Whenever we go to my hometown, with the only butcher I've ever known and trusted we stock up!!!

No butcher around here is anywhere near as good and supermarket meat is inferior by comparison. But, I have to rely on supermarket meat for much of the time. :(:(:(

Two things I just cannot economise on...cheese and coffee!

Sad to say but most of the 'farm shops' near to me (Yorkshire Dales) are tourist rip-offs icon9.gif

    Absolutely, me too!!! :D

Obviously cost is a factor for many people but I say if you can afford it then go for it!

I've just ordered my first lot of organic veg and meat and I'm looking forward to sampling them for dinner tomorrow, which will be the deciding factor for me as to whether they taste better and worth paying that bit extra for ;)

Ahhh yes, you do pay a premium up there don't you :(

I remember a particular weekend I spent there during the F&M crisis and to buy anything remotely regional was a complete rip-off, but then I could understand it to a certain extent because of what they were going through :(

Have things not improved in recent times then?

  • I suppose it is moneysaving actually - since buying so much tasty meat at this local farm shop - I haven't eaten out anywhere since!

The usual steak pubs and suchlike have such poor quality meat - and they think by filling the plate up with PEAS (which I hate) they are giving value for money.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Guess it's all about enjoyement.
If you can't taste the difference, go cheap (basic stuff like tinned tomatoes I really can't tell between value and branded) but if it matters go for the best you can afford. :T
In fact I'd rather not eat meat everyday but eat only tasty stuff.
Plus tasty stuff is better for you as you are likely to add salt... although you may eat too much of it!
You should feel good as well as you promote local growers!

OOooh errr, lots of "absolutely's" going on today!! :rotfl:

My local farm shop isn't over priced simply because "farming" and "rural" are not the main features of our area ... I'm nearer the coastline so many travel here for that and don't even consider the Farm shops; hence cheaper produce?

Still, I bet our tourists are charged more for their ice-creams and fish n chips than the tourists in the dales ;)

I know what you mean Queenie, and there's only one place I'd choose to buy all my meat if I could (was mentioned in one of the threads not so long ago) but can no longer travel to go and stock up :(

On the bright side though, I have a friend who's coming to visit me fairly soon so maybe I'll ask her to go and pick up a load of meat from there first, just as long as I can clear enough freezer space to store it LOL!

Oh, I totally agree with you there and I'd much rather eat meat just 1-2 times a week if it meant paying for quality stuff. The joint I have for tomorrow is only brisket, but it's free range organic so I'm hoping to taste the difference over the stuff you get in supermarkets. I'll let you know tomorrow!

I don't mind compromising in other areas to do this and you'll always find Tesco Value tomatoes and kidney beans etc in my storecupboard ;)
