Can this be right? Gas pilot light costing me £90.03 p.a.?
Options
Decided to check my gas meter reading since it was read 12 days ago (not bothered with this before). The thing has moved and clocked up 2 cubic ft of gas usage since then!
Have a gas fire which, I never use, and no other appliances in the house only a small ricketty old boiler in the loft which serves my very old central heating system (emersion tank not combi boiler).
Haven't heated the water (emersion tank) or put the central heating on for ages so was shocked to see it had moved so much.
Rang npower today, my supplier, to ask why I am using gas whilst not using central heating system or heating the water?
Guy worked out that 2 cubic ft of gas meant I have used £2.96 of gas in the 12 days  when I queried this he explained that the pilot light would make the meter move....... get that, but £2.96 in 12 days equates to £90 over a 365 day year, for just running a pilot light!!!!!..........Is this right, do you think?
Seems pretty steep to me?!
They have advised I turn the gas off at the mains, turn the pilot light out, switch the gas mains back on and then keep a check on the meter to see if it moves, said if it does, then they will get someone out to check the meter for a fault.
I can't believe that for the past 12yrs I have been sat here unwittingly throwing such a large amount of money away!!
£2.96 divided by 12 = 0.246 = 25p per day
25p x 365 = £90.03 p.a!
12 yrs x £90.03 = £1080.40!!!!!!!!!
Hope someone can reassure me that I'm having a 'blonde moment' and have screwed up on the math somewhere?!!
Seems hideous to me!

Carry out the checks they have suggested, isolate the mains for 10 mins or until the pilot light goes out then put back on. Also there is normally an isolation valve to the boiler turn it off Take your readings and then you will know!!!!.
There is another reason which hopefully is not present you have a small gas leak if they come to check the meter get a pressure test carried out also.0 -

Imperial meters read in hundreds of cubic feet. Are you absolutely sure that you are reading the meter correctly? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

If your boiler is using 2 cu ft in 12 days I would say that you have an incorrectly adjusted pilot flame or a small leak. Mine uses 1 cu ft in 12 days i.e. half. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Blimey!....but that still adds up to £45 ish running cost a year just for the pilot light, is this reasonably acceptable?
With your gas supplier maybe but I'm paying half that amount! Time you found a cheaper supplier. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
