OVENS- Gas or Electric?

Hi
I've been wondering about this for a while. Is it better to have a gas oven or electric?
When i say better, I mean which is cheaper (it has to be gas surely?) and what delivers better results? I know that electric has the advantage of a fan to ensure even weight distribution but what else should I be looking for?
What's an electric grill like? Is it as crap as I think it is?

Gas is more controlable & a gas grill will always champion over one on an electric coooker. Gas will work in power cuts, electric won't.
However, electric fan ovens are very fast & I would think there is very little comparison in running costs compared to a gas cooker. A conventional static electric oven would be the most costly.
Gas ovens tend to cost more than electric ones to purchase. The popular choice for most people these days is gas hob, electric fan oven. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Gas Hob, Electric Oven. As above poster says - gas more controllable (had a ceramic hob in my last house....didn't like it at all!), and fan electric ovens fast to heat up and just easier...0

Gas Hob, Electric Oven.
Me too. :j
Gas hob so easy to control and you can use it in a power cut. :T
Electric fan oven with a seperate top oven/grill. Quick to cook and you can turn it off for the last 20 minutes of cooking time because it retains its heat. :T£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Sorry to disagree with lots of posters, but I MUCH prefer a gas oven. I have had electric, fan oven and a ceramic hob and I hated it. I am a good cook, but could never get to grips with a fan over, cos everything seemed to cook quickly on the outside but never right on the inside.
First chance I got I ditched it, and have had a gas double oven put in my brand new kitchen, along with a gas hob. It has given me back all the pleasure I used to get from cooking. I love it, and would never go back, even if it cost twice as much as electric, which thankfully it doesn't. My family are now enjoying lovely home cooked food that is a delight to eat. I could never cope with the cooking instructions on recipes that said ' for fan ovens, see handbook! or adjust temperature and cooking times for fan ovens'
Another thing I didn't like about electric hobs was the way it stayed mad hot for such a long time, a big worry with little people in and out of the kitchen all the time. Gas cools down very quickly in comparison.
At the end of the day, it's each to their own, but I am so happy to have the gas back!:hello:  please play nicely children !0 -

My Mum will only have an all gas cooker.
Is that why her meringues are always better than mine?£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

I prefer to cook on gas too, but as previous posters have said it seems to be quite common to have a gas hob & electric oven.0

Hi guys
I am looking to replace my electric cooker with a gas one. Any good brands you had experience with and can recommend it. Also,do I need to leave a gap on each side of the cooker, because the present cooker is 500mm wide and there's a 50-60mm on each side.
Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stick to gas. If only a manufacturer will make a double oven with one gas and one electric. That would be perfect...
The trouble is there is little competition between them and that means less innovation. Cannon is now part of the indesit group, leisure and flavel are the same and Belling, stoves and New World are the same group.
