New Cheapest Home Phones Package But There’s A Catch

AOL has launched a home phones package which includes all local and national calls for £7.99 per month (this is ontop of the standard BT monthly line rental). This is the cheapest all-inclusive package on the market but there are strings. For the moment it’s initially only available to those who have AOL internet and you have to sign up to it by 30 June to get it at that price. After that it increases to the standard price of £9.99.
And don’t think you can sign up to AOL internet just to get the phone service then cancel. Customers must keep the internet service in order to remain on AOL Talk.
The package has no usage caps so there’s no hanging up and re-dialling after an hour, which you must do with some other services. AOL plans to make this package available to non-AOL users later in the year.
If you don’t make many UK calls then my top provider recommendation, call18866, is cheaper as it is simply 2p per call no matter how long you speak. Make over 400 calls a month, ie., 15 a day, though and you’d save money on this package.
The call cost for dialling mobiles, is actually pretty competitive at 13p per minute peak and 5p off-peak. Though you’re still better off on call18866’s sister company call1899 which charges 10p peak and 3p offpeak (with a 3p connection charge).

Although others (OneTel, The Post Office etc.) now offer to provide line rental as well (known as WLR or Wholesale Line Rental), there is some uncertainty about the speed of line maintenance should it become necessary if you take that up. BT's official line is:Wholesale Line Rental
This is a service, which enables someone with a BT line to have both their line and calls provided by a different telephone company, which bills the customer for both line rental and calls. Under this arrangement, the customer ceases to be a BT customer, and deals only with the other telephone company, although BT maintains the line under contract with the other company.Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").0
