IMPORTANT: To all Bath BS Regular Saver customers

Options
If you have a Bath Building Society Regular Savings account, check your standing order (SO).

I'll give you the background. I received a letter from my bank regarding a new standing order which had been setup on my current account on 3rd September 2007. I had no knowledge of having created a standing order, so I logged on and checked my current account.

There was a new standing order for Bath BS. The sort code was different and was to a Natwest account, when my old SO was always to HSBC. The account number was 8 zeros but had the same reference as my account.

I thought someone might have fraudulently setup the SO, so I contacted my bank. They told me that Bath BS had written in and asked them to create the standing order and remove the old one because they had changed their clearing bank from HSBC to Natwest.

Bath should have contacted their customers before doing this and I have registered a complaint to that effect. A manager called me back and apologised and said that the issue regarding notifying customers would be raised at their next meeting. He said that a number of customers had rung querying the same thing over the last 48 hours.

If you find that your SO has changed I would recommend ringing Bath to ensure that the details are correct.

  • Thanks Kazza.

For those like me who do manual bank transfers each month transfer should be to -

Sort 62-30-45 Account 00000000 Ref : Roll No.

Seems a bit remiss of BIBS not to notify Reg Savers

Thanks Kazza, especially for the follow up with Bath.

And how much are we paying these incompetents? And why does the Chief Executive need a "meeting" to get it right?

I know it's rather ridiculous isn't it. Writing to their customers didn't seem to have crossed their minds at all. It was quite worrying really, though I was relieved when my bank explained it all this morning.

As the uptodate info was not on their website, rang to check the rate on the original Regular Saver Issue 1, which I've had going for some 1 1/2 years. It has now dropped to 6.4%, so will be closing it as it is pointless keeping it open when I have a Coventry 50+ Esave account guaranteeing 6.4% until 31 Dec 08.

They will be correcting their website.
  • Seems a bit stingy - dropping 0.6% after last 2 BR falls. Still pays a not too bad rate & worth keeping for any possible future windfall rights.

How much do people tend to leave in for any windfall rights?
  • £100 required - does this account offer 1 'free' withdrawal per year?

Yes, I noticed this too. I couldn't find the new rate on their rates PDF so I e-mailed them. Each time BOE base rate goes down they chop off 0.30%!

    Rang them this morning.
It is now on their website as of today.
Yes you can have 1 free withdrawal per year.
In order to become a member you have to keep in a minimum of £100 in an account.
You cannot change the monthly amount you pay in once you have started.

Yes you can - but you can only vary by increasing the monthly amount. Any reduction reverts the account to standard Reg Saver (paying about 5.5% ? )
