Converting gas fire to woodburner.

We want to rip out our old gas fire in the living room and replace it with a wood burner (which we have sourced quite cheaply) as we have unlimited access to free wood.
Does anyone have a rough idea of the costs involved? Do we need to do something to the chimney and do we need a certified gas man to take out the old fire??
Any help appreciated.

You may need your chimney lined which could cost £1k+ including the installation of the burner and making sure adequate venting. We had to have a air brick installed over floor level to allow better air flow. Also chimney was lined but needed better lining so we had a stainless steel lining.
Some of the cheapo log burners may not last so make sure you get a reputable one and not a cheapo Chinese model, it needs to be cast iron
I don't think a certified gas fitter is qualified unless they have a HETAS certificate.0 -
You would be better looking at some threads on the other forms of heating board just search woodburner.
We did the same as you want to. It took alot of research before we went aheadThe measure of love is love without measure0 -
I think you need a CORGI registered fitter to take out the old fire. If the woodburner is fitted by a HETAS registered engineer then you won't need it to be checked by the building regs people. Make sure you get a conformance certificate from the fitter if you use a HETAS engineer to avoid any more paperwork.
Incidentally, cast iron isn't necessarily better than steel: there are some good steel ones out there, and some are a mix. There are pros and cons for both: steel heats up faster, whereas cast iron retains the heat for longer.Debbie0
