AGP Graphics Card upgrade

I'm not yet ready to rebuild with a new motherboard etc, and want to upgrade my ancient graphics card - so I'm stuck with AGP. I was rather hoping that with all the newer machines having PCI-E cards that the price of the AGP cards might drop substantially, but there doesn't seem much sign of that so far. (unless anybody can point me to some bargains)

Today, however, I spotted this

It does seem a bargain at just under £50 for a 7800GT with 256mb of DDR3, until you notice that the delivery time is estimated at 4 to 6 weeks! I'm just wondering whether this is likely to be a discontinued item and never likely to come back into stock!

I'd be interested to hear what the experts on this forum think of this card. I'm seriously thinking of ordering it to see what happens!

7600 GT! Yup, looks like a bargain to me, if it ever turns up. I cant say Im familiar with Xpertvision, so it might be worth reading some reviews before you take the plunge. Having had a quick look, others have it in stock for about £20 more, so I guess its a trade off between £20 extra, or 4-6 weeks.

It would be a bargain if:
    a) it was in stock
    b) it were a 7800 GT

It's a 7600GT that you have linked to. The price is good, but if you want one now then EBuyer have a 7600GT for £58.32:

Yes, sorry, I must be more tired than I thought! I meant 7600GT. I did see the Ebuyer one, which is only slightly more expensive, but also only has DDR2 memory, not DDR3. I'm not sure how much difference that makes........

7600gt is one of the best value agp cards you can buy. will play most things very well.
just dont expect to play the latest games though. they will either be slow or not play at all.
    Get some gorm.

I just thought I would update this - it appears that the £50 7600GT card from Amazon was indeed too good to be true. I placed an order on 6th Sept, with an anticipated delivery date by the end of October. Today that date has suddenly changed to 20th December! The card is still available on Amazon, but only through a reseller at £70 plus postage!

I don't think this is ever coming back into stock! I'm now looking at the Leadtek one from Ebuyer for £70 with free delivery.

hmm, do you really want to buy a 7600GT? Its not going to be running the new games at great speed (if at all) and while most older ones will play well it won't be a massive change. 7900GS is the minimum i'd get, at least it will let you play new games and give you time to get a new PC built. Its only £100ish so not exactly a huge step up from the £70 you'd dish out for a 7600GT.

Don't confuse DD2 and DDR3 with GDDR2 and GDDR3 - they are very different! The difference between GDDR2 and GDDR3 isn't that big, you'd see more difference in 256Mb to 512Mb (especially at higher resolutions).
Faith is believing what you know ain't so...

I agree with Cerro, & an AGP 7900GS (with GDDR3) is only £70 delivered. But be very quick as there's only 3 left in stock at the time of posting this! G

P.S. Out of interest, what's the present spec of your PC? Please include power supply (PSU) & OS details too.

    Thanks for your advice.

I am beginning to wonder whether I am stretching things a bit too far with the Graphics Card, bearing in mind that my processor is only an Athlon XP2600 (please don't laugh!).
Could there be a bottleneck which would mean that I am wasting time and money in a card like this?

I think an Athlon 2600+ should be fine with this (no laughing here - I've a 2800+ only).

Having 1Gb RAM will be helpful too - do you?

Your PSU is important too - what's its make, model & wattage? G

    I have 1gb ram (2 X 512 dual channel).
The power supply is 500w I think, with a load of extra outputs I haven't needed yet, so that should be OK.
    Thanks for your help.
