Bread...without a breadmaker!

Options
Rightio,

I have recently moved to Berlin for uni for a year, and quite fancy taking up the OS way of life. Although I'm not too bad with money, it'll do me good, and I've just seen a thread about the wonders of bread-making, and all the different shapes etc you can do. (Made me hungry!)

Now...I have no breadmaker, but I do have an over, a mixer, and shops that I can get the stuff from.

Is it possible/practical to do without one of those mystic devices known as a breadmaker, and if so, how do you go about making it...I know flour etc is involved but a recipe that is tried and tested is always nice!

XXX

(Great forum by the way, I shall wander over from the DFW much more often!)

My first reaction was going to be to say - buy a packet of strong flour and there will be a recipe on the packet - may not help unless you are fluent in the language though!

Here you go: Delia's simple 'How to Cook' recipe: http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/plain-and-simple-white-bread,1350,RC.html

All the equipment you need to make bread is a big bowl, a work surface an oven and and a pair of hands... :)
  • Good old Delia!

    Thanks very much. :)

    Hi there

I moved to germany about a month ago and have found it near on impossible to get "bread flour" as we know it in the UK....

You can get loads of flours that allready have the yeast in though...and i believe you just add water to them - sonstags bread...is a sweet brioche kind of bread...as i found out:p ..
Im lucky that i have a Naffi to rely on for the basic bread flour at least.. good luck...

Breadmaking without a bread maker is easy!

I've never had a breadmaker and I've made all sorts of bread.

The packets always have good recipes on them and there are loads on the internet. https://www.downsizer.net - there is a bread section there.

You need a bit of elbow grease for the kneading but thats all!
  • Thanks for the hint MrsMacawber!

I think once I'm settled and have a storecupboard sorted, then I'll start doing the grocery challenges....have spent lots today buying bedding, basic food, some veg and some toiletries...all of course in Aldi / Lidl etc, but it still adds up!

And I thought it was supposed to be cheap over here lol!

  • I have a breadmaker that I use a couple of times a week for regular loaves for sandwiches and toast.

I also make bread by hand (Delia's recipe is good). It's really relaxing, and has a better texture, IMO. I have a day off tomorrow, so will be baking, including bread rolls, and sweet bread.

Take a look at thriftlady's Adventures with bread dough thread. Some really interesting things there.

    Hi there Marksandsparksgal

Living here can be cheap -as youve found, once you have your basic storecupboard goods... im doing the Dbelle challenge at the moment 80euros to feed me n hubby for 4 weeks...and im under budget so far:j ..
    And we are eating well....
    roast chicken dinner
    toad in the hole
chicken n sweetcorn soup...made from the chicken carcass
    shepherds pie
    chilli etc

Oh and watch out for the mince.. as here a lot of it is part pork part beef... but it is cheaper and great for making meatballs etc;)

I found that for 9.99euro i can get a 10 kilo box of washpowder..that will last absolute yonks..

I have found that Aldi is cheaper than Lidl, it was always the other way round back home....

you will soon get used to it..drop me a PM if i can help you with anything:D
