Benefits and Ebay

I'm in receipt of Working Tax Credit and a bit of Housing Benefit. I'm going to be moving in with my girlfriend next year so I have been de cluttering my flat and as a result have been selling a lot of second hand stuff on ebay. Now my ex wife (who has a diploma in how to make things difficult) has threatened to shop me to the DSS. Can they stop my benefit for selling on things like unwanted clothes, books, cds, dvds and such like? I'm not manufacturing something to be sold on and I'm not buying new stuff to be sold on.

i dont hink they can, as the things you are selling depreciate in value they dont gain any profit. basically you are selling at a loss, and therefore not gaining anything. its like a car boot if you like. x

No they cannot stop your benefit for selling your own possessions, you are allowed to do that, if you were buying and selling as a business that would be different.

Sorry, but this made me laugh :rotfl:

Not the shopping part I might add! I really have no idea where you stand on this but what I was wondering was why did you tell her or how did she find out you were selling your things?? I'm just being nosey I suppose. I just don't understand why ex partners have to try and seek revenge when things go bad or is it just me  You must have done something really bad, oh, perhaps it's that you found a girlfriend! It would be nice to think that people could just move on and not look for ways to play games but that's me I suppose. Before anyone beats me up for my comments I am a woman and oh yes I am single and never been married so perhaps I'm not qualified to make any judgement!;)
    Sorry for this useless post!

No, i don't think they can do anything to you or stop your money.

It's your own stuff you're selling.

I'm actually self employed (receiving Working Tax credit) but i sell business things on Ebay as well as personal things..............but have 2 seperate accounts.

Because when you transfer money from Paypal into your bank account (or vice versa) your bank statement says PAYPAL next to it.

To circumvent Paypal appearing on statements is NOT to have money in or out via the bank account. (Obvious I know, but read on!)

A lot of ebayers buy vouchers on ebay using their Paypal funds. This is also why the prices for vouchers on ebay tends to match the face value. Ebayers then use the vouchers in stores rather than the actual cash and its not traceable.
  • You have every right to sell your own posessions on Ebay without it affecting your working tax credit or housing benefit. Once you move in with your girlfrind you will be assessed on your joint income as a couple.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

If you're manufacturing or buying new or old to sell on for profit then you would need to declare it, unless the income takes you over the amount allowed for savings etc which I doubt with it being a few unwanted items..

They know how much is going into your paypal account as they are able to access all of your accounts, bank or otherwise.
One day I might be more organised...........
