Rough Crossings is the astonishing story of the struggle to freedom by thousands of African-American slaves’
It’s the Revolutionary War in 1776. You are an enslaved African in America. The British ask you to fight your American slave masters and gain your freedom. What do you do?
This is one of the questions that intrigued historian Simon Schama about this incredible adventure story set against the backdrop of a pivotal moment in Anglo American history.
Rough Crossings tells the story of Britain, the slave trade and the American War of independence. It focuses on the little-known, heroic story of three incredible men: freed slaves Thomas Peters, played by Leo Wringer(Judge John Deed, Murphy’s Law), David George, played by Joseph Marcell(Juliet Bravo, Eastenders), and English Navel Officer John Clarkson played by Stephen Campbell Moore(Hustle, The History Boys).
Combining Schama’s trademark compelling storytelling with dramatic reconstructions, Rough Crossings follows the fortunes of Peters and George – who fought on the side of the British during the American War of Independence. Their dream of freedom leads them first to Nova Scotia, where they are met with nothing more than broken promises, unrelenting racism and hardship.
From Nova Scotia, Peters, George and Clarkson lead the convoy of ships to sweltering Sierra Leone. But will they make it? And even if they do…will they survive?
Produced and directed by Steve Condie this amazing story is available on DVD from 30th July. Executive Producer: Kim Thomas.
