Looking for a decent slr digital camera like Canon Powershot S60

Options
Hi Folks

Looking for a decent digital camera with lots of manual functions for my brother-in-law who is a professional photographer but doesn't know that much about digital stuff available (his work provides all his gear).

He basically wants something versatile, 6-7 mill megapixel, changeable lenses, etc...something that he can use for Weddings, Bahmitzvas and the like, heh heh. Outdoor and indoor work basically.

Looking forward to some suggestions and of course BARGAINS!

Cheers!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Canon PowerShot S60 is not a Single Lens Reflex camera. The Canon EOS 350D, on the other hand, is.

Some others to consider: Before you actually decide what to go for, however, you should probably take a look at sites such as Steve's Digicams, and perhaps look through a couple of magazines such as What Camera? or Digital Camera Magazine.

Then, when you've narrowed down the possibilities to a select few, pop into a specialist shop and try them out; there really is no substitute for handling a camera to get the feel of it.

The S60 is not an SLR. The canon SLRs are all in the EOS range and the cheapest is almost twice the price of the S60.
Also the S range do not have interchangeable lenses, again you need to be looking at the EOS range where you can use the lenses from an existing Canon EOS SLR, if he has one.

I'm not too sure about this one, but the Loot have a website that has a few decent digital SLR cameras going Cheap (http://www.loot.com/rs6/cl.asp?action=srslt&pn=1&ps=15&c1=3812&kyd=digital+SLR&psc=&psc_dis=0) If that link doesn't work go to https://www.loot.co.uk and search for 'digital SLR'.

I presume you'd get to try it first but I would be careful!

    Some others to consider:
My husband bought this camera recently at cameras2u.com and he got £100 cashback on it. He's very pleased with the camera so far.

You have to purchase the camera by 31/05 to qualify for the cashback
Same old same old since 2008

Thanks for the advice folks! Good job I did post for some help or he could have ended up with the S60 and not an SLR, this forum RULES!

Will check out the recommendations and get him to go and test 'em in the shop, as you rightly say -TangleFoot-, it's best to try before you buy.

Thanks again and any other suggestions would be very welcome...the more the merrier.

    :)

Cortes, 2 HUGE things to consider.

1.) What camera (system) does he own already? From your original post I'd guess Canon. If he's a pro, he probably has a stack of glass (lenses), flashes and other bits and bobs. So unless he's willing to reinvest \ sell up, he's rather stuck with one system. Depending on what type of photographer it is, I'd say he's probably either a Nikon or Canon man.

2.) What exact camera does he use? Again, if he's a pro and has something like a Canon 1V (top of the range film SLR) he would HATE a 350D (like buying someone with a ferrari the very latest Ford Escort...). If he does use a top end camera they'd probably need a top end digi SLR to compliment it (unless they just want to try it out). Then you're looking at the £2k+. Either way, I think these need to be asked and answered before either of you splash out cash...

    Hey EvilMonkey

He doesn't actually own a camera outside of work....just has expensive ones to play with in the studio at work.....and yes they are the top end slr's that would be way out of his price range. I have checked out the Nikon D70 & Pentax *ist DS and will get him to have a peek and see what he thinks.

Basically he's been asked to do the pic's for a friends wedding and thought he would invest and maybe do some other jobs on the side in the future.

    Thanks again all

I too am looking at buying a decent SLR digital camera with interchangeable lens' (zoom/wide angle) as a package and was wondering if anyone can recommend some.

Ideally I would like to take advantage of the dollar and purchase one when I visit New York in October.

No problem Cortes, just wanted to make sure we weren't sending you off on the wrong path....

The D70's supposed to be v good, as is the 350D. It might be a rumour, I'm kind of out of the loop in the latest developments, but I saw a post on www.dpreview.com talking about the Nikon D200 (would be the older brother to the d70, mid level DSLR).

Camera's sure are cheaper over in the US. But watch out, you may get stung for VAT (no duty payable) - I think that is correct.

Also watch for the warranty situation, for example Canon only offer a 6 month international warranty if buying form the US.

Best thing is to have a look at the review sites (like Steve's digicams and the like) and go into a shop and try them out.
