first aid for appointed persons course...HOW MUCH!!

Hi...Please can you help

I have to do a 'first aid for appointed persons' 1 day course so that I can set up my own therapy business. But Ive been on the St Johns Ambulance website and its £90 for a one day course. Nearly fell off my seat at the unexpected price.

Can anyone recommend another CHEAPER company???

Well, you could try the Red Cross and look at your local college / Adult Education provider, but TBH that's not a bad price for an all day event.

I would agree with SavvySue that £90 is about the going rate for the course. I was booked onto one in Aberdeen in June but the Company were doing a special half price offer. Unfortunately work got in the way and I did not attend. You may have to go with it.

if you check with local adult college..it should be in the price of £45. also if you get state that its something for your business, I think you can get it back on your tax relief.

We get ours for £35 per person. Can give you a great contact in the North East if you're anywhere near there.

I did mine with St John's Ambulance & it was a four day course (I thought to be an appointed person at work you had to do the full 4 days?!) and it cost about £400 for each of us. You don't just sit there and take notes, they have to bring in examiners as well as providing you with books, materials & a first aid box too.

You also have access to their advice lines and so on afterwards. It is expensive but for something as important as the health of your patients, especially as it's therapy work - surely it's worth the investment?

The four day course is a full FAW (First Aid at Work) certificate - it is different and much more indepth

£90 is not an unfair price to be honest - you have to consider the cost of the trainers, the facilities running cost, you usually get lunch, and any examiners fees (I don't know about Appointed persons but with FAW one of the examiners is a doctor - they aren't free...) and then the training material, the cost of maintaining the training equipment like the Resus Annies and so on.
St John doesn't charge £90 to rip people off but if you can get it cheaper then by all means

Just bear in mind the cost probably isn't less, it's just subsidised by somewhere (probably tax

As it is a requirement for you to set up your business, then it's a tax-deductible expense.

Keep the reciept, and claim it against your tax bill.

It will reduce your tax bill by about 25% of the value of the course - so in real money it will only cost you about £70

The point is - if you're going to do a first aid course, you may as well do a good one. It's a bit pointless being confronted with an emergency that you 'haven't done'!
