It'll be the constant live feed to the motor or the internal switch in the wiper motor assembly if they stop as soon as you've turned off the wipers with the stalk. Basically a wiper motor has 3 feeds..

    1) Earth
    2) Switched live - this tells the motor to start working and is sent from the wiper stalk.
    3) Constant live - this keeps the motor going until it is in the park position (indicated by the internal switch I mentioned) once you've turned off the wipers with the stalk.

If, with the ignition turned on, one of the feeds isn't constantly live then it's that that's the problem. If one of them is constantly live, then it's the internal switch in the wiper motor unit.

If the intermittent wipe, and possibly the combined wash-wipe function has stopped working, then it's probably the intermittent wipe/wash-wipe relay gone faulty.

HArdly likely. That just sends a pulse to the motor to start it moving. The rest is taken care of by the motor.
