Asbestos shed

Options
My mum privately rents her property and has done for the last 50 years. A new landlord bought the property approximately ten years ago. It has an asbestos shed in the garden which my dad put up forty years ago. The landlord knew the shed was in the garden whe he purchased it. My mum is now moving house to more suitable accommodation for the elderly. The landlord says it is mum's responsibilty to remove the shed, we have an estimate for £800.

Can anybody give me advice about who is responsible for the shed.

Many thanks

if your dad put the shed up it is your mothers property and her responsibility to remove.

Given that it is asbestos it is not surprising that the landlord wants it removed by her as you have found out the costs can be high. check with the Local authority who may be able to advise of a cheaper method of removal, they may have a department that deals with this themselves depending where your mum lives.

good luck hope you get a reasonable quote

Asbestos is dangerous if disintegrating; otherwise the best advice is to leave well alone.

Unless the landlord can produce an inventory from the start of the tenancy or any other agreement that the shed would be removed or indeed that the shed is owned by the tenant not the landlord, then I can't see the tenant being obliged to do anything.

  • Hi fariygirl. Have you tried looking in the free local papers for companys that are doing discounts at the moment for this type of situation. Its getting big business the removal of this nasty stuff:eek: so you should be able to play one company off against the other on price. As teeni says do try the local council for help. Silvercars advice is also worth bearing in mind too.
If i could i would, but i cannot so i wont, but maybe one day i will.

Whatever comes or goes.. Do not attempt to remove asbestos lagging, spray coatings or large areas of Insulation Board by yourself as these materials can only be safely removed by a licensed contractor. My advice swallow the cost get a pro in and make sure he dampens the shed before he starts work, lock all your windows and doors and make sure he cleans up to the teenth degree..
