Stolen Nationwide Debit Card! - What are they like?

So I had my card stolen (with my wallet) on Sunday the 1st of July at about 3pm (on the beach, a good 2 hour drive from where I live). Instantly we reported it to the police and when I got home (7pm) I canceled my debit card.
I then used my bank account online to check what transactions had taken place. Somehow three cash machine withdrawls had happened that day (amounting to 300 pounds). This surprised me as I wonder how the hell they managed to get hold of my PIN
.
So the next day I called the nationwide investigations department (not open on weekends, sigh). They told me they'd be sending a form (which arrived super quick through the post may i say).
On Tuesday, when the form arrived, so did a multitude of VISA payments that the thief had made on the Sunday (but which had not gone through the system until the monday, which I could then see online on the tuesday). These included a multitude of locations around the beach that I visited at varying amounts (mainly 20's here and there, with a 450 pound payment at a woolworths! ).
Anyway I then filled it out and decided to take it straight to my branch for faxing (I don't trust my local postal service).
So all in all the stolen money amounts to about 900 pounds, the ball is now in Nationwide's investigation court. As I live a fair way away I honestly don't understand how they managed to get my PIN :embarasse (I didn't use an ATM on that day and I don't keep copies of my code or anything stupid).
Long story short, I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with having their money stolen using a nationwide debit card, what are they like?
I found many threads about stolen cards, but nothing about nationwide in particular. Thanks in advance for any help!
