Car Insurance Rip-Off!!

Hi,

Just a warning to the motorists out there.

When you receive your renewal and because you are leading a busy life or simply cannot be arsed to shop around, by simply ticking the relevant boxes and enclosing your cheque, you could be costing yourself Thousands over the years.

1) Loyalty doesn't pay.

Insurance Companies give the best deals to new custom. (I found this, out quite by accident as one time I was a bit slow in renewing and when I rang up to renew was disgusted to hear that they wouldn't 'renew' cos the renewal form had expired and that I would have to make a completely new application, which I did. This came out £20.00 cheaper than my renewal price. Tut).

Go to Martins forum (Insurance) and check out the search engines that are listed there. Just had my renewal from Tesco. Last year £111.00. This year £168.00. Checked comparison search engine, just signed with Post Office (who were dearer than Tesco's last year), and paid £97.00 FULLY COM!!

2) Change of vehicle.

A couple of years back I insured My Opel Manta GTe. Changed it for a Cavalier SRi (Charge of £20.00 for upgrade of vehicle??). Then went back to a Manta (All in the same year) and they tried to charge me another £20.00 for a vehicle upgrade???. I hit the roof, demanded to speak to Supervisor and got the insurance renewed at the old price and got my £20.00 overcharge refunded. Bloody Cheek.

Boy, do you have to watch 'em.

I bet there is a minefield of other stories waiting to be told.

Anyway, boys and girls.

If you don't already - Just make sure that you shop around EVERY year.

Happier Motoring.

Good advice. I just got my renewal through and it was £600. I shopped around (which took me 3 hours - arg!) and finally got a quote for £300.

I have to say that I found confused.com (which everyone raves about) utterly useless. It gave me all these quotes in the £300-400 range, but when I went to the sites the quotes were all considerably dearer even though I'd entered exactly the same details. The morethan quote on confused.com was £350, but when I went to the morethan site is was £650 - eek!
  • I have to totally agree with rizla01, I've been with Admiral for years and when my renewal came this year I thought I’d check (inspired by this site) the quote on the actual Admiral website. Turned out the quote on their website was £215 cheaper than the renewal they quoted me. Phone up and complained and was told I would have to cancel the renewal and apply on line to get the cheaper price… Sounded like a load of you know what to me but hey to save £215 I gladly did it. So now I’m with the same company, same benefits and cover for much less...

You should never accept your renewal quote before looking around.

The same story with Churchill... I think most of insurance companies do the same.

I've been on to the confused.com site today & got a MoreTh>n quote of £220.99 [a saving of some 20 quid on my BellDirect renewal. I tried getting a new quote from BellDirect but it wouldn't work] & then going on to the MoreTh>n site itself the price seems to still be £220.99 right up to the point of purchase. I'm not buying yet as I want to shop around a bit more [try that EGG tip, for one. Also, get a quote from MoreTh>n as a cold-caller web-visitor (what?)] and it's not due for a coupla weeks yet, but...

Same story about existing insurers with me. My wifes car is insured under my name but with her named as the main driver. More Th>n renewal quote is £305.47. Went on their web site and the quote for the same cover on that is only £252.77! This is also the cheapest quote that I have found having tried about a dozen or so of the other insurers inc, Tesco, Direct Line, Elephant.co , Admiral, Churchill, TheAA, etc etc.

Also have same experience with Confused and Insurance upermarket sites. The quotes that they come up with are always significantly more than you get when going direct to the sites of the insurers. Probably because they do not use enough data to get a sensible quote. So you still end up having to go to the insurers own site anyway!

** I should really have said "connecting to the MoreTh>n site via confused.com..." rather than "then going on to the MoreTh>n site" because, despite others' remarks my good quote of £220.99 remained the same & it would appear that I could buy at that price for the cover I want. We shall see what a direct visit to MoreThan site produces, as I've not had time to do it yet, but confused.com's MoreThan quote is still looking good so far!

(^EGG quote was not competitive even with a 30 quid cashback).

  • I got a quote from Insuresupermarket.com - Kwik Fit seemed to be a bargain at £188.67 (last year I paid £328). Until I rang them to confirm details & get the same level of cover I have with the current policy (i.e. £100 excess, protected no claims & roadside recovery)........then they wanted to charge me £336 !!! It seems the initial quote to get you interested is ALWAYS much lower than the final quote you'd end up paying.
  • i would back up everything that has been said on here.
my insurance renewal is on the 11th of the renewal month, so at the end of the month before/beginning of the month, whenever i have time off work, i phone insurance places up, go to the brokers in town etc and see what the best deal is that i can get.
then i use the renewal as a source of entertainment 'cos i have usually got a quote thats loads cheaper by the time it arrives :-)
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

all your base are belong to us
  • just a quick note to say recently renewed car insurance using web.. tried lots got cheapest with churchills but when i got the policy through it had not given my no claims protection.. i called they wanted to charge another 75 pounds so i went back to original company who were only 10 pounds more than churchills original but had protected my no claims..(direct line) the point is that i have full protected no claims and if i had an accident in the time it took for me to get my policy in the post it would have ended up costing me thousands over the next few years as i would have lost my no claims... so others beware of this misleading method ... jo
