Not very clued up, but can you set up a business just being an affiliate without having anything to sell yourself, such a website just to promote these companies? Like a directory as such?

You can, sign up to affiliate schemes companies promote and sign up to affiliate networks. For individual company schemes you tend to have to search through sites that sell products you're interested in and check to see if they have an affiliate link.
There are a few networks that I use listed at http://www.xlac.co.uk/laffiliates.htm
However I think a catalog type site isn't going to get you far, there are loads out there already, what would yours have extra to draw customers in? You may be better off having a number of smaller sites on specific topics/products and add content, articles etc, to give them extra value.0 -
I do pretty well out of exactly this. I use 2 of the big players - commission junction and clickbank but I've also used amazon affliate scheme in the past. Clickbank covers virtual products (ebooks) on many different subjects with up to 75% commission paid per sale. Commission junction pays per sale or lead and has all sorts of companies.0

Hi
Here is a good list of affiliate networks that you can use....
https://www.affiliatewindow.co.uk
https://www.affiliatefuture.co.uk
https://www.buy.at
https://www.tradedoubler.co.uk
https://www.dgmpro.com
https://www.omguk.com (lots of financial stuff and high paying)
https://www.smart-quotes.net/affiliate.html (more financial)
https://www.cj.com
https://www.affiliate-advantage.co.uk
https://www.affili.net
https://www.clixgalore.co.uk
https://www.netklix.com
A good way to build an affiliate site is to find product feeds and use something like https://www.pricetapestry.com to display the results. There are a few ways to get clever about all this.
Those providers below offer contextual ads, google being the best, Oxado not as good. Miva is cool as they do the inline advertising, this is where their script searches keywords in the text of your pages and underlines these keywords which shows an expanded ad upon mouseover - this used to only be available on high traffic sites so it is a good that it is available to lower traffic sites.
https://www.google.com/adsense
https://www.mirago.com/partnerships/index.htm (they do contextual and self hosted search engine)
https://www.oxado.com
https://www.miva.com/uk/content/partners/miva_mc/ (inline and contextual adverts)
PM me can give you quite a bit of advice0 -
