Prudential Insurance - Accident - Help

Had my Nissan Micra since 97 from new & insured it every year fully comp + protected NCB; A1 Condition 30K miles, FSH, Drunk driver has damaged whole side of car whilst it was parked and admitted liability but only cosmetic damage. Found out today to my HORROR the Pru have written the car off as it's only worth I guess 500 -1500 pounds haven't had a formal offer yet as its too recent, but when they classify it as a writeoff say cat C or D is it worth keeping the car or will it cost bundles to insure each year as it will be on the total loss register as either a cat c or d.

Any suggestions as to a possible course of action would be grately appreciated; but to me knowledge of knowing the history of the car since new is important and around £1000 in compensation is not going to buy me what I had; I always had problems with second hand cars; clocking; burnouts; knackered gearboxes etc

I need some of your Golden advise as to courses of action; please !

Oh and PS as they are writing It off i'm not entited to a courtesy car or travel expenses either; worth remembering; but I don't know how they expect the kids to get to school on monday & they don't appear to care.

    If it is cosmetic you should still be able to use the car, tell your insurance company you want to buy it back off them and they should give you a price.

    Make sure your insurance is still valid, check with your insurance company.

    Dont forget to claim your excess back off the other driver.

    When mine was written off and i kept it the premium never went up after, but i was told if it should get written off again the car would have no value.

    The pru have said I can have the car back next week; and can continue to drive it until they write it off ie classify it; however what percentage are they likely to want for the car ? They havn't bought it yet. Is it possible they could settle and not right off ? I don't see the point of having anything other than 3rd party insurance in the future; if any little knock will write it off or if it gets nicked they won't pay out ! Does my logic make sense ?

    I paid £250 for a car that was valued at £800.

    Worth it if the car is in good condition, i stayed fully comp as it covered me if i needed to drive other cars and it wasnt much more than tpf&theft cover.

    Well if they are saying it is a write off then in the normal course of events they would give you whatever valuation for it (if my 98 fiesta is only valued at £900 then rough guess say your micra could be £600) and they'd give you that less your excess, and you'd hand it over. If you're keeping it then you would buy it back then in logic you'd again have to pay the excess but that would be it. Do you have legal cover? I think if you do you can claim off the other driver for the value of your excess.

    Well theres Good news and Bad News; Ain't there always.

    The Pru have offered £1380 for the car and allowed me to buy it back for £69.00 Yes you read right £69.00. I've managed to get a new door delivered from the beakers which has about 95% of the damage caused, I will fit this myself. Great I thought until I dug out the log book which they are requesting; and oh shi* its in my wifes name; she is a named driver on the policy but will they THROW out the claim. Hellllllllllllllllllllp they have requested a copy of the log book. The policy is in my name and I told them I was on the logbook.

    Still waiting ! They managed to lose all the documentation I sent them; sent a second lot yesterday;

    Aside make sure all your driving license details are up to date ie; addresses & Name changes for married women; big fines if you don't and cause massive insurance admin problems.

    Will let you know more when i hear something more.

    Managed to get a near perfect door & right colour from breakers £60 delivered so could be in the money but don't like to count my chickens.
