What do I say for feedback?

Hi
Ok, I may sound fussy to some here, but if I leave feedback on the book I bought through Amazon, I do want to mention this....
I will leave a positive rating as I have no problems with the book itself, it is in really good condition and arrived really fast, BUT - I'm sure that it has been 'sprayed' with something - it is much too strong to be a smell just picked up from within a house, really overpowering. TBH, I know that it has as I'm allergic to most air fresheners and Fabreeze - they really cause me problems...sore throat, itchy eyes - its not nice
I can only read the book for a few moments before I'm rubbing my eyes!
What do I do? I've got the book outside in a coldframe (!) in order to air it, hopefully to get rid of the 'fabreeze-y' smell at least. I can't really contact the seller and say anything as it seems silly, but if it had been mentioned by a previous buyer that the book smelt 'perfumed' then I wouldn't have bought it, so I feel I should mention this in case someone else has an allergy.
So, any ideas how to word it?
I have never thought about the possibility of getting a 'smelly' book before!! Will have to think in future about buying secondhand!
Thanks

Well, I'd start by saying that you were perfectly happy with the transaction, but, because of your allergy the book made you sneeze etc, as it appeared to have been sprayed with Febreeze or similiar. You don't want them to think you over fussy, but it is unpleasant for you, and it might be a good idea for the seller to mention this in future to avoid a reaction in other sufferers.
I don't see how they could object to that, especially if you rate them highly.0 -
if this was an ebay transaction i would leave a negative!0

I wouldn't go that far! I'm fine with Febreze, but there are certain air fresheners etc which give me a headache, and some can even bring on a migraine. If sellers think it's better for something to have an overpowering supposedly "fresh" scent rather than a faint natural musty smell, it's as well to let them know that not everybody shares that view. I'd say something "good transaction except that artificial freshener triggered allergies".0 -
Thanks for the help, I really wasn't sure how to word it without it seeming over-fussy.
greenstreetprince - a negative does seem a little harsh. Some people (for some reason!) do seem to like the smell of air fresheners, and although I love the smell of 'musty' books, I know that a lot of people don't. The book was in good condition so I don't think it would be right to leave a neg.
Thanks again0 -
Why not a positive and just drop them an email, they might not have thought about it too much. As you say they probably thought buyers would prefer them freshened up.0

It is not the Seller's fault that you have allergies - to anything.
On clothing, etc, it is usual to say if the household is smoking or non-smoking - I for one would not buy from a smoking household.
Most certainly not to leave a negative.0 -
Cute'n'Quirky - I don't blame the seller!! I have already stated that I was going to leave positive, and that the only reason I wanted to mention this is due to the fact that it is a common allergy and wanted to be sure that others didn't buy without knowing the seller sprayed books.0

surely if the smell is so strong they should have mentioned it?? its not something you can easily neglect when describing your items, its definetely something which should be mentioned.0

I once received a top that I had won from ebay that had been packed with a tumble dry sheet, it was new with tags so 'shouldn't' smell but the seller obviously thought they would cover themselves in case it did. It reeked however and made me gag the smell was so strong, even after washing it. I didnt complain as they thought they were doing a nice thing and make extra effort.
Having said all that I would be very embarassed to find that one of my books stunk and, as an Amazon seller, i would much rather have a reasonable person like yourself tell me than somebody who may make a huge deal out of it and give a bad feedback,
So if you think about it you are really doing them a favour

Spray it with deodourant or something!
If it smelt bad, at least they tried to fix it. What if you didn't like the smell of fresh print? Would you complain then?
On the other hand, a tongue in cheek comment might be best:
"Quick delivery, happy with book, albeit a bit whiffy for some reason!"0
