New to Tax Credits need a little help :-)

Hi,
Just a Question I am trying to work out what I might get here is the situation

My income £19,800 Per year Gross.

My wife now on maternity pay about £444 per month, but she will leave her job in a few weeks to continue looking after our first baby.

Will I get Tax Working credit? Now her income will be gone?
Can she claim Income support?

Can we claim Council Tax relief ? (please God)

We are currently getting Child Tax credits and Child Benifit

Anything else I can claim?

Thank you to anyone who can advise,

k.;) ;););)

    Hi

My opinion is that your probably wont get any council tax benefit (unless your rent/mortgage & council tax are high!) at least not whilst your wife is recieving maternity pay.

I would speak with local council & apply for housing/council tax benefit anyway. (they can only say no) Again, it may change when your wife loses her maternity pay!

Income support, no because you earn.

Child tax credits - Yes, speak to HMC within 3 months of baby being born (they will back pay for 3 months only) I would guess that your should expect £100 pm or more with your earnings.

As far as working tax credit goes you may get something, your on the boarder line roughly I think. You may just get a small amount.

Also check with your local DWP office, Im not sure if there is anything else available through them for an employed pregnant woman?!

Child benefit - This should be £17.45 p/w roughly, it doesnt matter what you earn.

    Hope this helps x

    Congrats & good luck. xxx

Thanks for your reply, some other chaps at work who are on the same wage as I do get Tax Credits so hopefully I will too.

Will ask the council for a claim form and see what happens, like you say they can only say no.

I will ring up the tax credit number once my wife hands in her notice.

    thanks again for your post!

    Cheers

Re-edited above post, with some rough figures, when I realised it was your 1st baby.
  • Our joint income is only £17490 and we have two kids - one is under 1 so get the higher rate child tax credit until Sept. We do not get working tax credits or housing benefit/council tax benefit or any other benefit other than child benefit.

    Is that Gross or Net?

Also do you not get Child Tax Credit?

I really dont think this is right. Another lady on here said something similar a few weeks ago. And it turned out she wasnt getting everything she was entilted too, just by a simple oversight on her part.

Has your income dropped/changed in last financial year? changed jobs etc etc?

How many hours do your work for this £17490? If over 30, Im 90% sure, you should be getting WTC.

As for housing/council tax benefit! This really, is dependant on individual circumstances. If your rent is cheap/your on a low band you may not make it. Again, I would have thought, on 17K that you would get something here too (having 2 kids!)

When did you last apply for HB/CTB? In your current property? Is your house rented?

Also, speak with HMRC, too double check things. Im sure your not getting everything, its worth double checking with everyone again. ;)

I wouldnt worry too much about this keith. I think there is probably a mistake. From what youve told me keith, you should at the very least get Child tax credit & child benefit once baby is born.

If you want to do a rough check, Ive heard, its not always 100% accurate....you could use entiltedto.com

    Hope this helps xxx

You will lose WTC after about £16500 (starts to taper at £14500).....assuming no other criteria other than 1xChild, working 30+ hrs, no Childcare, etc.

Well, HMRC say that you can get WTC up to gross earnings of 15K! However, I have one child, & last year worked 37 hours with 17K salary & was recieving WTC & I have only one child)

From my own experience (Ive claimed for other people, not just myself!) WTC is available for salaries of 20K.....I think, it is more, if you have to pay for childcare (as I do), if more than one person in the family works for this amount etc etc

Im a single parent, with a 3yr old & this year my net income will be 24/25K ish. (childcare has to come from this) But I will still be left with at least 19K & there are only 2 of us. Yes, all benefits are included in this....but the lower salary you have, the more benefits you get. The higher salary, the less benefits. However, someone with a higher salary, shouldnt be any worse off than, someone earning less. Ie, benefits should mean, that even if your salary is "reasonable" ie 15/18K for example, tax credits etc should mean, that you are at least as well off, as your neighbour with similar circumstances, who is earning only 7K.

Hope this makes sense, any questions, let me know. xxx

I think you will basically just get child tax credits, although should go up a bit once your wife's maternity pay stops and it's just your income. Let them know about your drop in income as soon as your wife gives up work so you get it sorted asap.

Dh earns £14500 gross (30+ hours) and we get about £18 a week working tax credit (it's just changed and I don't know off the top of my head, but it's around that amount), for 2 children over 1 year, and no childcare. Plus ctc and cb obviously. No council tax or housing benefit though.

    Have you tried 'entitled to'?
