Slow Cooker Recommendations

Options
I've been glued to these boards for the last few days and have picked up some very useful meal ideas, I've noticed some of the recipes mention a slow cooker, they seem like a really good idea and have often thought about getting one, I've been looking out for one on freecycle but no luck yet, I think therefore I may need to buy one :D

I've seen a fairly inexpensive one in Tesco for £19.99, it's only 3.5 litre, will this be too small for a family of 4? The 6.5 litre is twice the price. Can anyone recommend one?

I'm really hoping if I do get one I will get good use out of it, I have a very small kitchen so only want to get useful gadgets, I've had a breadmaker (on my second one) for about 6 years and wouldn't be without one now.

Thanks in advance

    Hi Dotmatic,

I love my slow cooker but use it more in winter than summer, although some people say they prefer it in summer because it cuts down on heating the kitchen with the oven.

These recent threads should help you to decide. There are too many to list here but if you do a search for slow cooker in the title you should be able to find more.

    Hi again,

The site is deadly slow this morning! :(

I just had a look at argos and the Morphy Richards 6.5 ltr is still on offer, reduced from £33.97 to £22.64. If I was you I'd go for as big as you can get. You don't have to fill it and with a family the leftovers always come in handy.

I've looked at the Argos one and it looks ideal and a good price. Can anyone tell me if they have timers on them and how long they take to cook? I know absolutely nothing about them. I'm looking to load it up in the morning and come home to a cooked meal :D

    Hi

I have the MR 6.5l Pink suggested (but thankfully got it almost brnad new form Freecycle!)

I made cottage pie at the weekend with the SC about 2/3 full (of just the filling, not the mash), and fed 2 adults, 2 kiddies and filled 6 foil trays. I don't know if it has a timer (haven't looked properly yet) but it does have 3 heat settings. If a timer is important you could always plug it into one of those 24 hour timer thingies.

Thanks that's helped me make up my mind, I've reserved one and DH will collect at lunchtime, can't wait :j

Just one more question, where's the best/cheapest place to buy the foil trays from? I can see I'm going to be needing them :D .

For foil trays try Wilkinsons or Poundland.
