I was just reading the first post in The Unneccesary Challenge where CAFCGirl talks about being quite happy to break into a note but is more reluctant to spend £2 coins.
Personally, I'm the other way around.
She also starts her challange on a Monday as she hates the bank on that day so doesn't get her allowance until Tuesday - one extra day she doesn't have money burning a hole in her pocket.
It set me thinking that there must be loads of similar ideas that may work for others. Obviously, what works for one may be temptatoin to another (see Notes v £2 coins above). There are plenty of these ideas scattered all over the forum so I thought we should perhaps collect them together in one spot.
Here a couple that work for me:
Garaging my car
Why? If its sitting on the drive, I am likely to hop in it to take the children to school or to pop up to the local shop. If I have to get it out the garage, it takes longer to get to school than walking. If I'm tempted to go to the shop, I am less likely to go on impulse if I have to be bothered with finding the keys, opening the garage, reversing out, getting out, closing the door....
Charity Trolley Coin
Why? I used to keep a £1 coin in my purse specifically for trolleys but I kept spending it meaning I had to find another £1. Now, I have a dedicated token on my keyring that can't be exchanged for chocolate/coffee/etc. plus, my £1.50 went to a good cause. (Martin, perhaps you should do one for the MSE charities - it would also serve as a MSE reminder everytime you enter the supermarket)
Monthly Treat Shopping
Why? I only stock up on crisps and biscuits once a month when I do a 'big shop'. When they are gone they are gone. Crisps are a treat in our house and not an everyday occurence.

Lots of different budgets... am I the only one who borrows from one budget to make up for an overspend on another? Doesn't that defeat the point of budgets? lolTotal 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

I have finally got a trolley token for the same reason as you!!
However, I usually get a basket instead of getting a trolley - why? 1. I don't go to the gym any more so it's my weight lifting exercise. 2. I can't fit £90 worth of food into a basket and so have to think about what I am getting and put the impulse buys back!
If we run out of something, instead of going to the shop that day or the next, I see if we can stretch to last one extra day without it (otherwise I impulse buy).
However, now that we no longer have a car (not by choice though), I find my shopping trips have decreased as it takes an hour to get anywhere to shop!!!working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Where do you get trolley tokens from. Because I don't like to carry money I am always lugging a basket round instead of getting a trolley.Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

That's what I didn't know - everyone I asked had been given one. Then my brother got one for me (as I asked SIL where hers came from). He saw them at the garden centre -if that helps anyworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
hi all,
im always using my trolley token.find it useful to get a trolley just to put my other bags in sometimes when i pop into a shop.would recommend them.got mine cos i was fed up of queueing at morrisons cust service desk for change.am still amazed how people look at you strangely when they want your trolley and you say no cos you have to put it back in the rack cos its a token. oh nd loads of peeps still aask if you have change.People bring great joy into our lives..some by arriving, others by leaving.im trying to be one of the former, so please bear with

It takes me longer to break into a note than to spend change. I'll go without everything if it means keeping the £10 whole in my purse! If it's in change it disappears which is why other than essential change I put it all in my terrimundi/change jar!0

I got my trolley coin at Sainsbury's @ the cigarette counter. They have boxes of them (£1 each) Hope this helps.0

I brought my first trolley token outside Tesco from a charity stall (forget which one), the replacement (forgot to retrieve it from locker) came from the swimming pool and was in aid of a local hospice. I brought a second from St John Gate in aid of St John Ambulance.
There was a basket of them at the coffee shop I used to work for. Try charity shops.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -
