help with colours please

i have a pretty basic council kitchen with whitem melamine cupbaords and an off white work top. the handles are chrome and we have just bought a cooker hood. this has given me the idea of granite and stone and steel. unfortunately that is not what my budget could afford. plus due to necessisty and speed we needed to lay a laminated floor in an oak colour. so stone and the like seem out the window now. i do however fancy the idea of spraying my cupboards silver and remember there being some good quality paints available now for melamine. i also went out and bought silver venetian blind, clock, wine rack etc and other bits. however i have no idea what colour i should or would look good on the walls. we also have an existing dado rail about half way down which can either stay or go. short of applying for changing rooms does anyone have any brainwaves or colours or even sites that may help a couple with lots of enthusiasm but not many ideas or colour schemes. thanks to all out there

  • What colours look good will depend on the light in the room. Start with colour chart cards (Freebies instore) and/or wallpaper samples which are alot bigger - get more than you could possibly expect to need and experiment moving different colours around without actually decorating. When you've narrowed it down, get tester pots, remembering that there can be big differences between similar colours from different brands. Test paint ON PIECES OF WHITE PAPER FIRST, move these around the room and last check before final decision is to put chosen favorute tester paint on the wall. Make sure you use Kitchen & Bathroom paint, or a vinyl finish wallpaper to cope with heat and steam of kitchen life. Investing time in good quality preparation makes for a better quality and longer lasting finish. If kitchen is white, be careful to protect edges etc. from stray slops of colour
