Scottish Power-End of Capped Rate? Watch Out For This

Today I had a letter acknowledging my acceptance of the new capped rate till 08 (version K) My old rate ended 31st March just gone. Reading things thoroughly like I always try to do, I noticed that it said the new rate increase will be taken into account on my anniversary statement. (Or words to that affect.) Now my anniversary statement isn't due till the end of August, which means that if I carry on paying my monthly amount as it now stands, I would be well behind by the time they did the new assessment. I have already worked out what my increase will be. (Thankfully nowhere near what they first said a while back when I rang them up), and have started paying the extra as an extra payment each month.

I am concerned that many may be in the same boat but have not spotted this, and will find a terrific hike in their monthly payments when they get their anniversary statements. Not only will they have around a 44% rise, but it could be even more for the months after the capped rate has ended, if they don't start paying more immediately.

Do take this into consideration if recently your capped rate has ended with Scottish Power, or is about to.

I have gone thorough three schemes since 31 Dec 2006 when my “Capped” rate finished.
Including “Online energy Saver 2” and “Online energy Saver 3”. I spoke to them yesterday and asked what the difference was and which would be the most beneficial to me as they have now launched another scheme called “Price Fall” which is mentioned elsewhere in the forum.
    However, the long and short of this one is that the price is capped until November 2008 and when the price falls (after any announcements on price reductions) the cost reduction will be passed on to the customer immediately;
The call centre said "IT DOES NOT REDUCE AUTOMATICALLY ON THE SAVER" schemes however the reply I got in the email was
".....Thank you for your email. You are unable to sign up to our new Price Fall package as this does not become available to our existing customers until the 9th of May 2007. You can sign up to this package through your online account after this date. You have advised below that you wish to move to this new package as the Online Energy Saver 3 rates will not reduce with any price reductions from Scottish Power, please be aware this is not the case and your rates would be lowered on this package. ......!!

So now I am confused; call centre says prices dont reduce automatically on Saver and Email Says they do reduce automatically.

NOTE: when comparing the Online saver3 scheme with “Price Fall” via the comparison sites “Price fall” came out about 0.092p more than “Online saver 3” on my annual gas and electric expenditure; so there does not seem to be any benefit staying on the Saver schemes!

Was that after you had allowed for the £15 discount for managing your account online?

I would love to leave SP on principle with them making so many mistakes. But while there is a significant saving on their tariffs, I can't afford to. Even though they still haven't lowered their prices yet I am still saving around £50 a year compared with the next lowest which is Ebico.

Yes it is with all the discounts; DD, online, etc. These are calculated into the tarrif when you select the scheme on the comparison sites. i.e. "Online saver 3" or "Price fall". On another note, I have had no problems what so ever with Scottish Powers admin (been with them since 2002).

However, I am concerned we have to constantly review these silly schemes every other week! Their systems people that write and support the computer programs to do the calculations on all the variations must be pulling their hair out:(

clearly there is an issue with scottish power keep launching so many different tariffs, it shouldnt be assumed that each new tariff is cheaper cos scottish power mess about increasing the price on 1 fuel whilst reducing the other. imo regulator should be stepping in and forcing scottish power to only have 1 tariff for each method of payment and only 1 online monthly direct debit tariff ( not including fixed and capped tariffs) this is what i had from scottish power when i asked them if the annual discounts etc are still given with price fall

"There is currently no other annual discounts or tariffs available, however we are reviewing the prices and hope to have further updates shortly"

My SP capped rate comes to an end tomorrow. SP has sent me correspondence indicating that as from 1st May my DD would increase from £55.50 pm to £75 pm an increaseof 35%. On searching the switching sites it became apparent that Powergen and BG were two of the cheapest around and if I switched I could save aroung £10 pm.

I rang SP to find out if there were any price reductions in the pipeline and they, ie customer services, said that they had been told some were coming but not how much or when.

On going back to the switching sites I noticed a SP Online Saver 3 tariff and calculated that this was just as cheap as PG or BG. So I rang SP back and asked about this and they said I could change as from 1st May, which I agreed to. The following day I received an email comfirming the change and stating my new DD would be £64 pm, an increase of 15%. I was loth to switch to either PG or BG as I have heard that PG has billing problems and BG's customer service is diabolical.

I will say this for SP, their customer service is good, no hanging around listening to silly music, and their staff are polite, helpful and one can actually understand what they say. However I ask myself, why didn't they mention Saver 3 tariff the first time I rang??
