My sister's Old Style Move

Options
Due to circumstances that I shan't go into here my sister has just bought a new flat for her and her daughter. Everything has been on a tight budget but a lot has been achieved using the old style approach. She's brought a couple of bits from the marital home but most things she's had to acquire from scratch. Via freecycle she now has a sofa, an Ikea footstool, a Reader's Digest DIY manual, a bathroom cabinet and a fridge freezer. She's fortunate because the flat was repainted and a new kitchen fitted by the previous owner but she in turn has been able to freecyle the original stone sink that came from the kitchen and a load of cabling that was left behind. She's bought a table and chairs from our local hospice shop and several other bits and pieces. Remaining items she has bought from Ikea. With the curtains there has been enough left over to make her a table cloth and my Mum has also converted a shower curtain into a bathroom curtain. The next project is to recover a headboard from freecyle. The curtains in her daughter's room are old ones which were my parents which have been shortened and the remnants freecycled for cushion making. Naturally there are 2 bottles of Stardrops waiting to be christened!:D
I hope someone finds perhaps a tip here that may be of help...by the way her place looks lovely and shows what can be done when funds are tight.

Thanks for this inspiring post! I hope your sister will be very happy in her new home. She should be very proud of herself for all she has acheived under difficult circumstances.

Well done to your sister :T I hope she's very happy in her new home.

I'm pleased that she acquired a DIY manual - I got my first one 30 years ago and never looked back; over the years I've built up a really good tool kit and really enjoyed being able to do simple repairs etc myself.
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Well done and good luck to your sister.

It reminds me of when I started my first home on my own with my two young daughters, many years ago now. My gosh wasnt I glad of anybodies old curtains or furniture. I even aquired a cot and a twin tub that someone was going to dump the problem was I had to take it there and then, with the help of a friend and her two children we pushed the twin tub to my house, and managed between us and the 4 children to carry the cot as well

What I will say is when you have had to make do and mend it doesnt half make you appreciate it when you finally aquire something new!!

I wish your sister all the luck and love in the world. She should be very very proud of herself - a real inspiration!! I regularly contribute to freecycle and I love it when my treasured possesions go to good homes and not to the tip.

Its amazing in desperate times, the lengths we go to in order to save money and "freecycle" - I only wish more people was like ourselves (mse users) and your sister are able to do it, and hopefully spread the word & break the cycle. After all - fashions do change, and people are always out with old in with the new!

Ive had some excellent bargains from freecycle, or even the local ad mag, and Ive also done my bit, by passing things on!

The latest news from the OS front is that my Mum has made my sister a peg bag from the rest of the shower curtain and a cover for the work surface which she has hemmed so my niece can sit up at the kitchen top and draw. My sister is off to collect and indoor aerial from freecycle as we speak!
