Upto 6 years free cover on goods

Not sure if this in the right area for the post or indeed if it has been posted before but

The link below will take you to a DTI factsheet about the sale of goods act with general advice on what it covers. One of the points it raised is this

For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

This sort of makes a mockery of the 5 years breakdown insurance which many of the high street retailers sell on electrical goods in addition to the one year guarantee most manufacturers offer on new goods.

I found out about this because my boss's gas cooker went wrong with one of the gas valves giving up the ghost and leaking gas throughout the house overnight. The cooker was 13 months old so he went armed with the document linked below to the retailer ( I don't know who) and spoke to the store manager. It was referred to their legal department and 2 days later he got a call from the cooker manufacturer offering a free repair.
