advice on mangetout?
Options
I've just bought a couple of mangetout plants to grow in a container in the garden. Other than feeding and keeping them watered, is there anything else I need to do - I was wondering if I needed nets to protect from birds, or anything like that?
Never grown veg before, so I'm hoping to get it right, and not get put off in future.
Thanks.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Hiya, I grew sugar snap peas last year which are virtually the same. Other than keep well watered (they need plenty of it for sweet crispy pods), even more important if you're growing in a container, and giving them poles to grow up, I don't recall doing much else, didn't even feed!
Don't forget to keep picking to keep more coming, that was where I went wrong. And enjoy, they're beautiful picked and eaten raw straight away!I :heart2: Boots

Hi
I grow a yellow one called Golden Sweet (Real Seeds). As long as your soil is decent (if weeds grow it is decent), they will grow well.
Are you sure you have a couple of plants, or have you got a couple of pots full? How many stems have you got in each pot?
You will need stakes. Find out which variety and we can work out how tall they will grow. And ribenagirl is right about needing to keep picking. As long as they are not allowed to set seed, they will keep producing more flowers.
On the other hand, once they are well established, you can allow one pod on each good plant to go to seed and then you have lots of seed to grow your own next year.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I had some mange tout seed for last year that I forgot about it, so went to sow it at the weekend and the mice have been in my greenhouse and eaten all but 6 seeds. Fingers crossed that they grow!
The most important thing you can do for yours is water them, keep an eye on them in hot weather, they may need watering twice a day. And keep picking, as already mentioned.0 -

Like they all say - pretty easy to grow and a bonus if you have kids- i find mine will eat them straight off the plant when they'd never eat them on the plate!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0

Peas like to be sown in a warm soil - it should not be cold to the touch.
Mangetout is easy. I gre it on clay last year, and watered well and left it to it. We harvested loads of them. I was picking every day at one point!
I haven't even sown mine yet this year but have a bed with well rotted manure warming up under black plastic so I shall be doing it soon as I want an earlier crop this year.
Peas are successional crops - pick and pick and they keep coming. If not sow or plant new plants every few weeks to get a long season.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
