Attracting vistors to your website

If this has not already been done: I'd like to start a discussion on how to attract visitors to your website.

I've tried paying for web traffic : but these seem to be pop unders and dispite claims that traffic was highly targeted, it seemed as if they were just sending anybody to my site regardless.

Google ads seem to be very competative these days and therefore very expensive.

I've even tried a bit of SEO, but to be honest it seems very complicate for me to perfect. I've seen loads of websites who guarantee top google listings, but this just seems unrealistic. Does anybody have any good/bad experiences of this?

feel free to chip in with anything you feel might be relevant:beer:

submit your site to the search engines, add a robots.txt file varify your site by adding the search engines tag ie: google ask you to add a tag to varify your site.
    whats the URL?
  • Register your site on dmoz.org - Major search engines pick up listings from here and it is free.
  • create two ultimate viral videos. post them on youtube and then get people to go to your website to vote for the best :D

    Hello Brian,

I wouldn't use any sort of search engine optimisation company who claim to put your site at the top. Google actively scan for the tactics they use and drop the ranking of sites that employ them. While you may gain in the short term you're likely to end up getting your site black-listed in the end and lose all your hard work.

One of the first things I'd do is go round looking for other sites that might give you a link. A surprising number of webmasters are happy to do this if you also give them a link and advertise their site. Getting links from other genuine high quality web sites helps boost your Google ranking and you also may generate traffic from those other web sites as well. Obviously avoid any sites that look dodgey as that can detract from your ranking. A small web site I operate generates about 80% of traffic off links from just two other much more popular sites and not from search engine listings at all. It's hard work going round asking lots of people, but it pays off in the end.

I'm not sure what kind of site you have, but if you're trying to advertise some sort of paid for product or service, you could try offering some other sort of useful service or information for free. For example you might run a regularly updated blog on your particular field of interest or something like that. If you get the customer to visit your site to get the free information then you have a free platform for advertising your paid for services without any competition from other advertisers in the same space.

    Regards

    Bonzer.

Getting good search engine listings for specific, non-competitive keywords and phrases is dead easy these days - make sure that the way your site is built is spiderable, put lots of text on it and submit it to Google, MSN and Yahoo!

Getting well listed for competitive search terms is much, much harder. You're up against entrenched competition, sites which have been around for years and who spend lots of money on site promotion.

For a new, small business, the best way to attract custom through search engines is to start by concentrating on one or more niche search terms - this might be your geographical location (town, street) or a specific service you provide.

Make sure the terms you concentrate on are mentioned in the text on your site, in headers and especially in the page titles on your site.

Let us know a bit more about the kind of business you have and we might be able to give more specific advice.

I've just created a website and I did not submit it to any search engines and so far it has appeared in google, msn and yahoo.

As long as you have decent content and a structure that is easily navigated by the bots you should be fine.

I have a pdf of a very good search engine optimisation book, if you would like this please pm me :o)

also if you do need to build up links to your site as mentionned above, if you wish to link share with me please pm me :o)
  • I use blogs, forums, social bookmarking, autosurfs etc to promote my site.

Elsewhere on MSE Brian, people seem to think you are now spamming your website. If that is so, is that any way to repay the people who have helped you on this thread?
