I bought one of these a couple of months back (for quite a few quid more I hate to say!). Don't know if I was just unlucky or whether it may me a general fault with this model, but I lost all audio capabilities within two days. Through the tv tuner, the dvd player, and when I recorded there was no sound whatsoever. Took it to my local currys and they exchanged it no probs, even though it was more expensive instore.
The new one has been going ok so far. It's fairly easy to use once you've had a quick browse through the manual. I have managed to make some decent dvds from old videos and camcorder tapes which is what I wanted it most for. I like the way it has many inputs to choose from: scart, s-video, the red, white & yellow input thingies (techno-ignoramus me, sorry!), etc.
The only downside I would point out is that to get the full 6 hours recordable time you have to choose a low quality recording. And yes I do mean 6, not 5 as stated on currys website. The maximum recording time you can get from an average 4.7GB, 120mins dvd in this recorder is 365mins. For the highest quality recording you only get 60 minutes. I don't know if all dvd recorders work in the same way, since it's the first one I've owned and I'm really not up to speed on them. Oh and just for info purposes, it came with a dvd+rw disc so you can get started playing about with it instantly.
Anyway, hope that helps someone. If anyone needs more specs on it let me know and I will dig out the manual for you
Ooh-err ... Just thought of another thing I don't like about it! It is definitely only Region 2, it won't play any of my Region 1 discs. A couple of weeks after I bought it, Tesco were doing a multi-region recorder on their deal of the day for about 20 quid more than what I had just paid for the Matsui. I was well gutted If multi-region is important to you, I would wait and see if you can get a better deal from Tesco or Amazon or somewhere. I would have gladly paid the extra few quid if I hadn't already bought this one. Ho hum ... Thought is creative. Think beautiful thoughts, create a beautiful world.0 If multi-region is important to you, I would wait and see if you can get a better deal from Tesco or Amazon or somewhere. Multi-region hack for matsui dvdr100:
 open tray (ensure it’s empty)
 close tray
 press dvd/rec
 press return
 press info
 press 8880
message appears then disappears in few secs. You are ready to watch any region.

was tempted by this but a quick google showed it to be not a total piece of junk like the philips 880 - but 'you get what you pay for' would sum it up.
I'm going to hold tight until the budget-end recorders' dust has settled. :money:Multi-tasking is a way of ensuring you don't enjoy any of them.0

don't put all the 880's in the same bracket!
i have had my 880 for 2 years (well 15 months but i'll get to that)
initially there were problems with the machine cutting out rendering the discs that were in the machine at the time as useless. took it back to currys swapped it another error kept happening took it back swapped it, got it back and updated to the latest firmware, and for the past 15 months i have not had a single read or write error or a machine reset + the features on the 880 are by far, superior to any budget player avaliable on the market. also i have a RAM recorder (philips) and the recording on RW-ram is rubbish to the extent where you can still see what was recorded below it.
i wouldn't touch a budget recorder for a while yet you might aswell just get a £30 video recorder. unless you really want to keep the TV you are recording.
In which case you should splash out an extra £100Where the !!!! has the Shrug gone! just doesn't cut it...:think::huh: and these don't come close0 just doesn't cut it...:think::huh: and these don't come close0
