need garden advice please ?

Hi,

Just bought a new flat with a nice big garden that's a bit overgrown and needs a lot of work.

For starters though it seems really uneven and I thought of hiring a 'Rotavator' ?

Any better/other suggestions appreciated pls.

Thanks.

Chris

    Hello christopher_h

I'll move your thread to the 'Greenfingered' board, where it should get more responses.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

    Regards

Hi, Chris! What sort of area of ground have you? I'd say a rotovator's not worth it for much less than 1/4 acre. My reason being, that if your garden is overgrown, you'll need to remove perennial weeds (dock, dandelion, couch grass, ground elder, etc) anyway, which on a small area you might aswell do by digging. You'll then need to break up the soil, and level it by raking.

Just my opinion - that's how we did it on our 1/3 acre garden over the last 10 years. Lot of work, but worth it.

Hi Chris, welcome to greenfingered moneysaving.

The other benefit of not using a rotovator is that if you tackle one section at a time, you can keep an eye on the garden and see if there is anything worth saving in the garden. I actually left my garden for the first year to grow (I just kept it mowed back, etc) this was to see what items were growing in the garden that I wanted to keep, and what could go.

I inherited a few bushes that were definitely worth keeping and a lawn that I hated mowing!

So now, the lawn is gone and I have two patio areas, bigger flower borders and a veg border.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
