Secondry schools appeal

Sorry if this ia a double post last one dissapeared!

Last Sept we had to fill out an admissions form for seconry school. As we knew we were moving before xmas i put the schools we wnated in the area we would be oving too and put a note on the form explaing the situation. When we moved we sorted out a new primary school and i took all paperwork in that we needed to prove addy etc. The school sent a transer form by Fax (luckily for us!) and the old school sent their bits in. However for whatever reason the Ed office did not change the addy and so we have been allocated a place in a school in our old area (about 30mins away)its also a sink school which has permanent vaancies and its own copper and drug raids!

The Ed office say i'll have to appeal and they have verbably admitted its there fault but officailly are blaming everyone else. Has anyone else had to appeal in simular circumstances? Our nearest school is rated outstanding and so is very oversubscribed but is the one he should have automatically gone to. Both his Primary schools are giving me copies of faxes or letters to back me up. Anything else i can do?

Thanks

wendy

I don't really have much pratcial experience of this but my first thought is to ensure you are on the register of continuing interest for the school you want him to go to. If you live very near you may end up allocated a place if/when people refuse places (I know it's a long shot, but you have to try everything)!

Given what you say, I would think you stand a chance at appeal, especially if the council are admitting the stuffed up!

I have all this to look forward to next year.......

How have you got to know yesterday, we have to wait unitl tomorrow?! Wish you the best of the luck with the appeal - stick to your guns and take the attitude that naturally they will sort it as it's their mistake.

Wendy - I have known of a similar situation where a friend submitted a new form for a school place but the LEA school admissions used the old form and assigned her a place at a school she no longer wanted. First friend knew was an offer letter for the previous school she had requested and at this point the school she had most recently submitted a form for was full.

The LEA officers were quite ude, insistent it wasn't their fault and said tey would have to appeal. A number of other parents were appealling for a place at the same school for various reasons. However friend was contacted by the LEA and offered a place, contrary to their procedures and before their appeal went through. I think the LEA knew they were in the wrong but as they were council officials couldn't bear to admit it. Hopefully the same what happen for you.

If you do have to go to appeal the letters from the two primary schools should prove to the panel that the admissions policy has been misapplied and I can't see how you would lose.

    Get in touch with ACE

They will be able to advise you how to appeal and also post you leaflets about it. It's about 7 years ago since I used them, they helped me immensely and my appeal was successful.

Don't if you will read this in time but there was a feature on today (radio 4) this morning about successfully appealing about the allocation.

It was with someone who has written a book about the best way of doing it and he gave several tips on the item.

It was about 8.30am and I think you should be able to listen to it on the listen again feature on the bbc website.
