How do you Organise your Baking Stuff Cupboard?

Hi guys!

Ive got so much stuff now in my cupboard after being on here and doing baking etc - its getting so full up !!!! and I find I have to pull alot of things out to get to something else!

SO I Just wondered if i could organise it any better? What is better for storage to get the most out of the cupboard space?

what does every else do with their Flour - leave it in original bags?
Sultanas, dried fruit etc - in tupperware boxes? or do they take up too much room and best left in their bags?

any ideas? thanks x

I don't think it's a good idea to leave baking stuff in the original packaging because it encourages vermin - Trust me, this is from personal experience:eek:
But organised? Well, lets just say organised chaos would be a better description

Your local Teso might have some containers left at 10p each that would be suitable for dried fruit etc

I decant everything into tupperware. This all stacks together and thus maximises the amount I can get in the cupboard.

Hi Shez,

I cleaned mine out recently and found lots of things that I didn't even know that I had.

I keep things in their original bags but I've now arranged things in order of how often I use them. This means I can find the stuff I use regularly easily.

For things that I don't use that often, I have now blue tacked a list to the inside of the cupboard door of what's in there so I can see at a glance what I have and don't end up going out to buy chopped walnuts when I already have some.

I use the same system for most of my cupboards and fridge, an idea from an old friend of mine.

She had a fantastic kitchen with lots of cupboards and she loved cooking all different sorts of food. So she had baskets in her cupboards, one for each theme. eg Chinese ingredients, Indian, Baking etc. Another cupboard had the general stuff such as flour, sugar etc that might be used for any type of cooking. She would just take out the basket she needed there and then.

The baskets she used are the ones you can buy in sets of 5 or so from a pound shop (sometime cheaper) but you could choose what fits your cupboard or even make something yourself out of carboard boxes or ice cream tubs etc.

I have found this most useful in my fridge - my top shelf is condiments and sauces, curry paste etc and I was forever juggling 4 or 5 jars while I got the back item out. Now my shelf holds 4 baskets and I just take out the one I want. I'm working up to these baskets for all my cupboards as they are easy to wash if you have a spillage.

They are good for standing up packets of soup/sauces/flavourered rice etc as you can just flick through for the one you want.

In terms of what I store things in, I use anything from old tupperware to takeaway tubs (from the good old days) so that no pests can get in. I have found that Asda and Tesco have good ranges of Lock n Lock tubs and I am buying one each time I go shopping until I have enough.

If you do take things out of the original packaging, remember to label them. Very hard to tell different types of flour!!!

I use old coffee jars-the 8 oz size-for dried fruit etc. As well as labelling the front I stick a label on the back and write the "use-by" date on it.

For smaller things like nuts I have some nice cork topped jars that I got from a charity shop.

I do leave flour in the bag and just fasten the top with a large "klippit" but I keep the bags in a plastic box so don't get flour on the shelves.

Could anyone tell me what size Lock'n'Lock container I would need for those big bags of flour (1.5k??) please? I keep looking at the Lakeland site but can't see anything that looks remotely like a flour sized box, or maybe it's me.....

Thanks very much! I'm using some old plastic boxes I've had for years at the moment, but the clip has gone on one of them and the last thing I want is an infestation of weevilly things.

lock and lock boxes in rows on narrow shelves along the understairs cupboard wall. I`ve been collecting the boxes for quite a while now and even invested in a load when I started to re-organise. It is nice and cool in there too

Lock n Lock style tubs and their impersonators are quoted in litre sizes. Do you have one of those jugs with measurements on... perhaps you could put a bag of flour into it and see what 'litres' it equates to? Otherwise, without sounding facetious, you want one the size of a bag of flour!
