Diamond Insurance - Unauthorised renewal

Hi
In October last year, three months before my insurance was due to end I contacted Diamond stating I did not want to renew again as I was going to Australia.
I am now in Australia and have received a email from a debt collection agency acting on behalf of Diamond.
Apparently they have been unable to take payment for this years insurance premium even though I advised them in advance I do not want it.
I understand that they send a letter out asking you to contact them if you do not want insurance again. I am in Australia for 12 months and this letter will be sitting at home unopened.
Do they have any legal rights to do this even though I told them in advance I do not want to renew it? I have sent a complaint email to diamond but other than that what can I do?
I don't want to be wasting valuable money (and sleep! Time difference) on phone calls sitting in queues to diamond and the debt collection agency.
Does anyone have any advice....
Thanks

If you called them and made them aware that you wished to opt out the auto renewal process then they should have that call logged on there system. I would email them telling them when you called eg a rough date, tell them to check who has been in your account on or around that date. Most staff in insurance call centres have there own unique ID which stamps your file each time they go in to it. In addition to this you may find that they record all calls, maybe worth telling them to check calls.
Either way stick by your guns.If I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0
