Doing a Spring Clean & MSE-style Treasure hunt

Hello,

I'm thinking of doing a Spring Clean of the House, the whole jobby top to bottom.

I've decided to also do it MSE-style & look for the following in each room while I'm at it:-

Old Coins- Under beds, couch etc, gonna Put em in a jar towards a well-earned DVD rental.

eBay/Bootie stuff- anything not is use is going on eBay or Bootie, that shouls encourage some hoarding-type volunteers.

MSE-style Energy look out- e.g. check for Draughts, replace bulbs with Energy saving ones, etc. (double green clubcard points on them on Tesco too at mo) while I'm in each room

"Aaah there It is!" stuff - find stuff that's gone missing & use it instead of buying it 'cos thought it was gone-for-good. Last time I recall, amongst other items, finding 6 rolls of cellotape having just bought some!

Anyone fancy joining me? (not literally!) & posting any ideas/finds/sells & other discoveries (old mouldy plates perhaps?) on here.

Good luck to You All with everything Money Saving xxx

So already I've found enough cleaning materials for a couple of years. I also found a £2 coin in a drawer :) , a hand painted plate that someone gave me about 40 years ago and I'd forgotten about (not lost for 40 years though :)) and this last one is a doozy - a dvd behind the fridge. How the ....... ?

  • Hi All

Think i might join you on this little adventure - im off this weekend form work so i think i might start tomorrow and do a bit of a search,

    amazon a few things
    freecycle a few things
advertise to sell a few things in local shops

(no car so no boot sales!)

and then i htink when it gets to the kitchen i might do a mass cooking session on sunday and get some frozen food together so that next week is better -a s convenience rather than nutritional has been the main thing this month

will let you know how i go tomorrow when i start

ps are we keeping a spider count??

Think I'm joining in this one.

OH starting to take tiles off the bathroom wall for a redecorate, and I'm hoping to start clearing out the small bedroom ready for redecorating into a nursery for 6 months time.

Anything worthwhile that I don't want is going to charity (I never seem to get organised enough for eBay). Time to be ruthless after 2 years of the piles of stuff growing!!

Question... while I don't hoard books, I like Terry Pratchette and won't get rid of his books once I've read them as I do reread them sometimes.... where does everyone else keep their collections of books? I don't have a book shelf etc, so am thinking the loft...?

  • I started doing this this morning too,as i have a long weekend off. I found our local paper on the internet and advertised some of the kids toys. This saved 55p on buying the paper. I spent most of last weekend on and off cleaning my absent DD room and made 80p in 1p coins well i don't see why I shouldn't get somthing for doing it. Not that she is bothered. To say our standards are different would be a gross understatement. (gross being the operative word) DS had his bedroom door unlocked yesterday so I went for a cutlery and crokery hunt and found a lot. And quite a few new strains of penicillium. So getting through the house gradually. I have cleaned the cooker and the rabbit hutch, and the doors and tops of the kitchen cupboards as well. I had a slow cooker on top which I have never used and am wodering if I should sell it. I know you will all say use it. But my OH bought it and really it seems too small to cook anything worthwhile in for 4 and anyway I am not going to start preparing dinner at 4am when I get up for work.

  • So far found 8 rolls of cellotape, why oh why, 8 of them. One dear make that I bought for 99p (oouch!) when I though I'd ran out lol. Also, lots of dust behind PC & 50p down the couch whilst watching Martin on Trevor McDonald, wow little scamps the banks. Having a pause tomorrow to write to Abbey asking/demanding lots of cash back in charges...I digress.

Also, 3 magazines my Mum gave me found & forgot under the stairs worth £9 & an upholstery curtain-type attached well I never knew I had.

How are you getting along out there fellow kind money savers?

  • My books have been stored almost everywhere in the house, from boxes to shelves then falling off, to bookshelves which I went off cos I thought they looked untidy (don't ask), now their scattered about everywhere hence I owe over £1 in library fines when I found & saw dates on 2 of them!!

  • I have actually started in the living room awhile ago. We have moved in our new home 3 months ago and we still have not actually sorted most of our things...but tonight I thought I#d start with our living room table as it is filled with paperwork that are long due to be filled accordingly. Tomorrow, I'll be tackling the storage room by kitchen and see if I could make some space for other things that needed home such as my work stuff and various bits and pieces. I will try to organise and find things that are not being used anymore and try to sell them at ebay (I have OH permission already...). Wish me luck!!!

  • I'm doing the same as you, we are off to a car boot tomorrow, the house is coming down with things not used and any money made is going to our holiday fund.
