What’s the deal?
SeaFrance is offering free ferry trips to France between 16 and 24 June 2007, with one catch – you have to take a bike.
The offer’s valid on all Dover to Calais crossings that week, as long as you’re a foot passenger traveling with a bicycle. A normal return fare costs £24.
How to book
To book call 0871 663 2559 and quote FREEFTDAY for a day trip or FREETRWK for a stay up to week long.

Any cyclists out there?
SeaFrance are offering FREE crossings for footpassengers with bikes from 16-24 June (bike week). 20% off if travelling before those dates.
Take the car and a bike and they'll only give 10% reduction.
full details here http://www.sailandcycle.com/
The downside is I'd have to cycle 150 miles to get to the ferry

Booked my free ticket this evening.
Can anyone suggest a good restaurant/Cafe where we can hold an unofficial MSE freebie cyclists rendezvous? I'm going on Sunday 17th, I'm planning to drive to Dover and leave my car in town.
Thanks for the fantastic spot, Martin. I'll buy you a pastis if you want to come along.

Sunday 18th March is Mother's Day in the UK.
17th June is a Sunday0 -

Russell Street car park is the nearest long term car park to the Eastern Docks which is also free on a Sunday - turn left off A20 from Folkestone direction just before the swimming pool or turn right off A20 leaving the docks just after the swimming pool. Russell Street is a 10 minute walk to the docks.
The closest free parking to the Eastern Docks Mondays to Saturdays is not far from me, on Harold Street, but you have to arrive before 8.30 to get a space. IT's a 15 minute walk from Harold Street to the Eastern Docks - I shall be on the lookout for people unloading bikes off cars in the area!0 -

The cyclists with Deal Tri may be able to answer that question for places on the French side as they often do daytrips to France. The Deal Tri website has its own forum:

If you are looking for somewhere in Dover, Blakes wine bar / restaurant is very pleasant and smoke free already and only a few seconds/minutes cycling to the docks.0 -
"15 minute walk"....Why walk? I've used that car park with cars and bicycles, and it is a 5 minute ride.
In Calais I greatly recommend "La Diligence" for delicious low priced meals in comfortable and interesting surroundings (you can Google it and book ahead) and Hotel Richelieu for simple, comfortable rooms, both very close to each other and a very short ride from the ferry. The hotel is in a side street off the main shopping street, opposite the pleasant Parc Richelieu. We've had lovely family breaks there.

We are thinking of booking this for a few days. I have a few questions though....
How easy is it to get on the trains with a bike in France? Do they even accommodate bikes?
Are there any nice cycling routes around Calais/Dunkirk etc?
Also, will we be able to get by with a phrase book, as my french vocabulary stretches to Bonjour, and ends at Au Revoir?.......:o0
