JJB are now saying they'll give you a free current England away shirt and an England mug if you bought one of these shirts from them....

    http://www.jjbsports.com/announcement.html
as a gesture of goodwill to our loyal customers, we shall shortly be advertising in the national press that we will be offering a free current England away shirt to any customers who present evidence of the purchase of a 1999/2001 England home or away shirt or a Manchester United home or Centenary shirt of 2000/2002. Evidence of purchase will include handing in one of the shirts in question to our stores or presenting a valid till receipt or credit card statement. In addition customers will also receive a free England mug.

It not clear to me if "handing in" one of the shirts means they get to keep the original shirt, or if they give it back to you in addition to your new shirt.
  • Much as that seems like a good deal from JJB.

How many people are really going to have a receipt or indeed the shirt which is 6 - 8 years old.

I have football shirts that old but they hold special memories and I would imagine most people attach happy match watching memories to their shirt. I cant see many Man U fans wanting to give up their treble winning shirt from 1999.

Smacks to me of them having to be seen to do something, knowing full well that the number of people going back to them could be counted on two hands.

True MSE'ers wouldn't buy football shirts to begin with.
  • I have two of the Man U red shirts pictured on the site (that we still wear occ) but if i have been over charged on both shirts and i take them to JJB to get new England shirts, wouldnt i be loosing out by more money if they are keeping the Man U shirts????
  • I have the England away and Man Utd Home shirts. As JJB are offering a refund just for having the receipt (not that anyone still would have one), then I would think that they dont require the shirts.

If I was JJB, I'd ask the people that do come back with their shirts to fill in some kind of disclaimer, or something so that I have a record, and could say, look I gave compensation to this person, he/she is now satisfied, please wipe that off our fine.

Plus, what's to stop me going on eBay, buying one of the 'offending' shirts for £5 or less, and taking that in, to get the new England one + a mug, regardless if I'm a football fan or not.

I'd also like to know how they identify shirts as being bought at JJB? I can't remember 6 weeks back yet alone 6+ years. I guess the best way to find out would be to go to a JJB store and ask.

Anyone that beats me to it, please let me know.

  • Been in JJB today.
They DONT take your OLD shirts back.
They DO give you both the latest England Away shirt (06/08) and an England mug free.
They also cut off the labels from the old shirts, and get you to write your name, address (though no-one put their post-code from what i saw), which shirt you bought and then sign it.

    No complaints from me!

I've had a reply from the Which solicitor. they want documents to prove my ID eg passport copies and utility bills, I'm a bit reluctant to send them in the post in case they are used for other things.

can I write across them "only to be used for X"?

Following an OFT ruling into price fixing by a group of suppliers between 1999 and 2001, Which consumer group brought a class action on behalf of 1,000 replica England and MU shirt purchasers who will now get a refund of £20.

Others may qualify for a refund of £10 (label intact) or £5 (label missing) on the shirts which can be viewed on the JJB website here http://www.jjbsports.com/content/static/static.aspx?pagenum=92

JJB is handling claims on behalf of the following group; JJB, Allsports, Blacks Leisure Group, Manchester United, Sports Soccer, JD Sports and Umbro Holdings.

To check whether you meet the criteria for a refund see the Which website here http://www.which.co.uk/reports_and_campaigns/consumer_rights/campaigns/Football%20shirts/Make%20your%20claim/camps_football_claim_559_118437.jsp

    From the article.....

"In what is seen as the first example of American-style consumer justice in Britain, 1,000 people who joined the test case brought by Which?, the consumer watchdog, will each receive £20 from the company. Lawyers are now looking for similar cases that would result in compensation for customers"

Maybe it's just me, but I don't particularly see too many positives in this story and to be honest, the idea of compensating people who have willingly made a conscious decision to purchase what is little more than a fashion item, simply because the price of said fashion item was fixed seems a tad strange..... Especially given that the purchaser is likely to have been completely happy with their purchase and had years of good service out of it.

As I said, maybe it's just me.

  • Would just like to let people know that I received a cheque for £40. in the post today. This was for compensation in regards to the above ruling.
