DLA savings & the HB

Options
when you claim for HB, in the form they ask you for money you have in your accounts & savings.
My question is if i have DLA savings in a current or saving accounts mean i get less HB or may be none depending on the amount saved!!
Does it count & affect?
Do i have to declare that money or savings?

Other benefits don't take in account the DLA income. They ignore it.
But i have no idea if the HB follow the same criteria as well or not.

Many thanks for your help in advance

  • A guide to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit (RR2 Apr 2004)
downloads a guide which will help you.

You are right that for calculation of income purposes your Disability Living Allowance is not counted as income for Housing benefit. See page 85 of the guide.

The same would apply to the consideration of Disability Living Allowance as part of your Capital and Savings only IF it were a backdated payment for arrears arising from appeal but this is only not counted for up to 12 months. Once the 12 months is up, or if in your case you have banked your normal weekly DLA money, once you have breached the savings and capital £3000 threshold then it will affect how much Housing benefit you receive.  You will see how much of this will be taken each week from your Housing Benefit on page 95 of the guide, but it isn't happy reading.

  • thank you+ for your help and your generous reply.

    Understood. I got it. Hopefully

    As income it's ignored.
As a part of savings it's counted and has to be declared if the savings is above certian amount(£3000 i.e).

"The first £3,000 of capital is not counted. Capital over £3,000 up to
£16,000 will be taken into account at £1 a week for each £250 (or part
of £250) of capital over £3,000 . Actual interest
payments or dividends are not counted as income but as capital.
For example, if you have capital of over £3,000 but no more than
£3,250 you would have an amount of £1 taken into account in the
calculation of your HB/CTB. If you have capital over £3,250 but no
more than £3,500 you would have £2 a week taken into account,
    and so on.

This rule is general to all benefits and not only H.B.
Means -1 from H.B and another -1 from the rest of each benefit you may recieve.(an example for amount of no more than £3250 of capital and savings).

I was mislead by the term "ignored as income".

    Thanks again
