The HMRC have launched a new guide to advise people who sell online whether they should be paying tax or not.

(Whilst useful, frankly, I am dissapointed by the lack of detailed information provided.

Yup, pretty basic isnt it. Possibly they are trying to spell it out for those people who simply do not realise that they are liable to tax and maybe VAT. I reckon the only way they are going to be able to enforce full tax declarations for eBay sellers is for eBay to release information to them about levels of sales for individual sellers.
Ive known this happen for other organisations but I dont think eBay are registered in the UK so I think that may keep them out of HMRCs reach.0 -

Its like one of those 'idiots guides to ......' books. Tax for the permanently dumbed down.:dance:One good turn gets most of the duvet!! :dance:0 -
Don't knock it please, it's useful for some, including me.... and I don't consider myself as 'dumed down'0

whilst not necessarily on this particular forum:rolleyes: ( I am thinking more of the actual ebay boards), there are an unusually large number of "educationally challenged" posters!
we have to be kind to people asking what we perceive to be, "silly " questions.
I consider myself to reasonably intelligent but even I have an occasional "dumb" moment ( or two).
hmrc need to make things as simple as humanly possible, if it looks even remotely complicated, people will not bother to read on."There is a light that never goes out"0 -

I meant that they have dumbed it down... as if they felt like they could only be talking to idiots. NOT that the people who use it are idiots.:dance:One good turn gets most of the duvet!! :dance:0 -

Exactly! When they said that a new guide was being produced, I was hoping for a really indepth guide that covered more than what was already available on the HMRC site (which wasn't that much), but instead they have managed to produce a guide with even less information than what was already there.
Don't get me wrong, it is a good, simple introduction, which is great and much needed, however it would be so much better if they then also included more detailed information for those who need it. Given the subject matter, I would have thought that this was especially important as I'm sure there's plenty of people out there who would be put off finding out any more by the thought of having to call the taxman. :eek:0
