Alliance & Leicester - Account opening problems

HI,

I applied online for a DirectSaver account and received a request for certified ID documents and form signed by an authorised signatory.

These were posted back as per instructions but a delay followed.

I rang and discovered that A & L are going to reject the application because the signatory did not put their job title on the form that was signed.

1 The signatory is an accountant and included their job title and telephone number on the certified copies of driving licence and gas bill, beneath the signature in each case. This read 'Director, ...... accountant'.

2 A & L have given me problems with past applications and I had to go into a branch to get copies certified.

Has anyone else had problems with them?

    Any takers?

I have also got some feedback from colleagues who've had problems.
Are A & L setting the hurdles to pick a certain kind of investor?

I have also had problems. I applied last OCTOBER(!) and still haven't had the account opened.

I was asked for certified ID and went to a branch on my way to work to get it done. (I assumed this would mean that it was done properly.) However my address ID was rejected. No reason was given, but I assumed it was because the lady in the branch had only p/copied the side of my bank statement that had my address and account summary on, and not the side showing "customer activity". Anyway, I was asked to provide another form of address ID.

I sent them my a certified copy of my council tax bill. However, the address on the council tax bill differed in minor details to the address I gave on my application. It was clearly the same address though. I have one of those addresses where there are lots of optional bits, like the area of London, or the word "Flat" prior to my flat no. Anyway, I was asked for yet another piece of address ID (at least they gave me a reason this time).

However, as my address has lots of optional bits, many official institutions miss out parts, depending on the standard way their systems deal with addresses, so I don't actually have an official bank statement or anything with the word for word address I gave in my A&L application.

I wrote to them to explain this, and asking them to use a bit of common sense, but I have yet to hear back. I'll probably be black-balled now!!!!

I should emphasise that in my situation there were no inconsistencies in the addresses, just parts that were optional to include, and in my A&L application I included as much address info as possible.......

Hi, I see a pattern emerging here, with similar anectdotes I've received form several others, but I don't know why.

Why would A & L do so much on advertising, offering top rates, only to give applicants a hard time ?

It just doesn't make sense that their hurdles are so much higher than normal.

Perhaps they only want a certain type of customer who are also likely to take up their debt products as well.

    Hello guys,

I have received the same problem as well. I applied around xmas time. They requested a copy documents, which i got signed and verified by the Alliance and Leiscter staff (in the hope this will speed things up!) but I have been phoning up ever since and keep on getting the same answer ..."I would suggest you ring up next week as it is still getting processed!" Its been about 2 months now...

And now they sent me another request for I.D!!!

    Crazy...

I am lost and dont know what to do or how to get it sorted out..

Is it worth applying again online?

I have to conclude that A & L have some perverse reason to want to turn our business away.

Perhaps they must control how much savings they can take on.

    Why disappoint potential customers though?
  • I have now started a formal complaints procedure against A & L and contacted the FSA.

My application for a Direct saver acct flopped because they didn't like the certifier of the ID documents. A & L advised to go to a branch and have new copies certified, which I did and posted to them.

They now claim further errors exist in the online application (I checked copies and can't see any). They say I have to start from scratch.

Is this a situation for all to beware?

The bottom line is that they have lured me with attractive rates to fill in an online application. In doing this they have extracted personal information out of me such as my bank accounts, driving licence and utility bill details.

I return they are being unhelpful in resolving the application and appear not to want my application.

Lets see if they treat the complaint seriously.
  • Please let us know the outcome of your complaint. Mine's a slightly different story - and in another thread - but I am less than impressed with A&L and am also waiting for their response.
