re-cycling cashmere jumpers...

Options
I have 3 cashmere jumpers and 1 cashmere cardigan with holes in them :(

My mother has done her best to mend them, but they don't look so good.

I can't bring myself to bin them or put them to the textile recycling ... so I'm looking for some OS inspiration!

What can I make these in to ????

All suggestions welcomed ....

I had thought about perhaps making a wheat bag cover, but not sure whether they are heat resistant?

Any other ideas ??

Could you make them into cushions? Where about are the holes? Could you cut them into squares and stitch the squares together to make a patchwork blanket.

Could you make a sausage shaped wheat bag and then use a sleeve off one of the tops as a slip? I don't know if this would be better, but in my mind, it wouldn't be being microwaved and it wouldn't be in direct contact with the bag's contents.

This link craft stuff in today's guardian has lots of projects one of which is reusing old jumpers to make mittens or some such thing.
  • Maybe you could cut a square from each jumper and make a cushion? A posh shop near me has loads of fancy knitted cashmere cushions that seriously look like they've been made from old jumpers :) There were some with buttons down the front that could be made using the cardigan, and some with little pockets on them that you could do using the sleeves and the ribbed bit.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Are they really that bad? Or is it just you who knows that they are there?

I ask as I once bought a past its best cashmere sweater on ebay ( I feel the cold loads more than the regular girl), at a bargain price. Long and short of it is, it was beautuful, far to good for gardening as suggested. A wee stitch here and there and its good enough for work!

If they are ....... can you make a waistcoat from the cardi?

How about outrageous patches over the repairs !!!!

You could unravel it and re-knit it. There's a tutorial on how to do this here. Or you could felt it to make a sturdier fabric that you could cut without it fraying or laddering to make into something else (like cushions or a wheat bag cover).

If you make a wheat bag cover I think you should probably make the actual bag out of some other fabric and make a slip cover for it with the cashmere so that you can remove it for cleaning because you can't wash the actual wheat bag. The cashmere should be fine in terms of heat resistance though, provided it is indeed cashmere and not blended with any type of synthetic fibre. It will provide good insulation and make the heat pad nice and cosy to hold so it doesn't feel to hot or go cold too quickly.

Thanks for all your suggestions :)

The wheat bags I've made in the past, are all made with removable covers, so I think a snuggly one is in order :)

I love the idea of make a blanket out of them ... especially as they are all bold colours :) ... and apparently my DD's doll needs a blanket too .... according to her, LOL ....
