I reckon a lot of Plasma TV's will drop in price when Sky & others start doing thier new High Definition TV decoders as the TV requires an HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) connector (looks like a squashed USB socket) and a lot of plasma's out there don't have this connector.

Yes, but the HD ones will fetch a premium price. The best bargin 42" plasma at the moment has to be the panasonic pw6. That originally was a similar 2800quid new, but is now getting closer to the 1000quid mark.
  • Where have you seen the pw6 panasonic for near to a £1000 ?? The cheapest i found was £1799 ??

Indeed. Im sure another av place had it for 1200quid when i looked, plus they threw in an extra module. I got the name off the avforums but it escapes me now!

The richer sounds deal looks good.
  • Be sure to check what you get with these - that LG one at £999 doesn't come with a tuner or speakers. It's really just a display for playing DVDs (when you already have separate surround sound!).

Indeed. In my case, i have a seperate home cinema surround sound system, and so i dont want any dodgy looking speakers on my plasma. I also have NTL/Sky, so dont need a tuner.

i reckon that splashing out £999 for a plasma tv without high definition is a waste. i believe this because first of all when you see regular plasmas in the shops the mojority have not so good screen quality also the money factor £999 for sumthing that will be outdated in a matter of months.

if you have the cash to splash i reckon you should go with this, however if you dont wait a little while for high def plasmas to become cheap, or just by a cheap regular tv.

All televisions do the same job at the end of the day

It depends on what you want really. I have no need for a High Definition TV. Im still using a 28" Sony Triniton telly which i bought for £10 second hand back in 1992. The only reason I havent upgraded is because ive been waiting for plasma`s to drop in price. And its taken quite a few years before plasmas have got to the 1000quid mark. I expect it to take quite a few more years before HD gets to that mark, and id also have to upgrade the rest of my equipment to cope with HD.

When you see them in shops, like dixon`s & currys, they usually have some crappy ariel on the room wired up to about 100 tellys, so the picture is bound to be a bit rubbish. Id recommend looking at the specialist forums, like the avforums and asking current owners what they think. I looked at nearly all the sub 2000quid plasma`s and the best one by far going by peoples reviews was the panasonic pw6.

Not all televisions do the same job. Some are big & bulky, some come with tuners, others dont. Some have built in speakers. Some cant display a vga input. It all depends on what your criteria is and what you are looking for.

Anyway, this is all irrelevant to the fact that a plasma for £999 is a bargin!

    Hi

I have been watching all the posts on this thread and a lot of good points have been raised. I work for a large Plasma manufacture and you might find the following information useful if you are looking to purchase a Plasma.

    1. Not all companies that sell Plasma actually make them, there are only 5 companies in the world that manufacture plasma, this means that you might buy it because it has a badge that you know or trust but it may not be all that it seems. You can pay two very different prices for a Plasma Panel that comes from the same factory but with different badges.

    2. Brown Goods (Television) ratings e.g. Candella & Resolution are not governed in the same way as White Goods (Washing Machines, Fridges). Without getting to technical if you buy a Fridge with an 'A' Energy rating it means that all 'A' rated fridges will have been tested in the same way to come to that rating. With Brown Goods it is down to the Marketing Department for that company to provide the Rating based on the test they do.

    I hope this is useful.
They have the internet on computers now!!!
