What's the deal?
There's a special offer for Primus only available through commerical price comparison service Uswitch. With it if you sign up to Primus TALK 1, which costs £1.49 a month and includes evening and weeknd calls, it will give you £5 a quarter off your bill. Overall this means you make 50p a quarter (or £2 a year).
The following is a direct link to the Uswitch deal: Primus Talk 1*
Is this any good?
For those who don't want broadband and home phone together the Primus TALK 1/Primus SAVER OPTION 2 package is the top deal - as if you call them direct you get it for no monthly fee. (Primus SAVER OPTION 2 is exactly the same as the Primus TALK 1 offered through Uswitch; it just has a different name if you go direct to Primus). Via Uswitch you pay £1.49 a month and get £5 a quarter rebated. So its a tiny bit better but very fiddly.
If you can be bothered to do this please ensure you read the full Cheapest Home Phones article which explains how to best utilise this tariff to fully cut your call costs.
How does the rebate work?
Once signed up you'll receive your £5 quarterly bonus directly off your bill. The call credit is non-transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash if not used up.

* Using these links helps the site stay ad-free and free to use, as they’re ‘affiliated links’ which invisibly take you via commercial price comparison services like Moneysupermarket or Find, which then pay this site per click
You shouldn’t notice any difference, the links don’t impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things I write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue. If it isn’t possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it is still recommended and still included. The following uswitch.com identical unaffiliated links provided for the sake of transparency. Click on the following link for more details on how this site's financed.

T's and C's
- Customers can only receive one quarterly bonus for each account in their name.
- The new customer must still be switched to Primus on Carrier Pre-select 'All Calls' option when the call credit is provided on the quarterly bill.
- New customers must make at least one call outside the inclusive calls for each month of the plan - so that's an evening or daytime call to a mobile.
- The contract is for 12 months. If you leave before this you'll lose any bonus and will have to pay the remainder of any fixed charge.
- The bonus is for the first 12 months only.

Presumably after one year the 'rebate' is lost and the monthly charge continues at £1.49. If you do not cancel after this rebate period then the direct sign up route seems the better deal.Save a Lert0

There are cheaper ways to call mobiles from landlines than using Primus.
Primus have a minimum charge of 7p when calling mobiles, so just making a connection for these mandatory calls are going to cost 84p over the 12 months.
You could save a little by just making a normal landline connection instead each month during the daytime. The minimum charge for these calls is just 4p, so just 48p over the 12 months.0 -
One company I've found is 1899.com. All you have to do is to sign up on line for free and when your account is active start making calls. To do this dial 1899 then the full number (even if local). The good thing is that National land line calls are free and mobiles are 3p per minute at the weekend (please check though). They also do a fairly good rate on international calls, although getting a phone card is sometimes better.
The thing I really like though is that before the call is connected a voice prompt will tell you how much the call will cost per minute .... good to remind you to be brief if calling a mobile, or to relax if a land line.
It really is quite simple - which is good as I am a techno biff who's being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century!!0 -

Have I misread the site....doesn't it say for calls to landlines there is a 4p or 5p. connection charge..and then presumably the rest of the call is free0 -

See you are new here, most people on MSE have been using this company for several years, 1899, 18866 and 18185 are always mentioned on here.
What you have missed out is yes UK landline calls are 0p/min but each call attracts a 5p connection charge.
18185 is cheaper for calls to mobiles. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
muffinhead has found (see HERE) how to get uSwitch to offer the 'real' Primus Saver Option 2 - so the 'fiddly' part (of Primus Talk 1) Martin mentions in his OP is eliminated - and it's still possible to get £16 cashback by accessing the uSwitch website from a link in Quidco.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
