Graphics Card upgrade question

Hi

I am planning on upgrading my Graphics card to

ATI 9550 AGP 256MB its about £40 from Ebuyer.co.uk

Can anyone reccomend a cheaper place to buy this from or an alternative graphics card.

My current one is so dated, its a PCI graphics card. I want to use dual monitors one day, and also want to make sure that vista will be able to run on it fine. Not that i am planning on installing vista until service pack 1 is out ha.

Thanks in advance for your feed back.

Have you checked that you have an AGP slot on your motherboard?

Froogling it, it seems that around £36 upwards seems to be the going rate for the 256mb version. Its hard to know what to recommend in its place without knowing what features of the card you need or want and what your motherboard can handle re the speed of the AGP slot

My Motherboard has a AGP SLot - The old PCI card work out of this before.

Anyway the AGP can only handle upto x4 speed.

256MB should see me for a few years, and the DVI out put will let me use two monitors and also give me high definition output should i need it in the future.

I have found the RADEON 9550 at PC world for only 37.99, but it is collect at store only. No stock in the NOttingham store or close by.

Any way i can get one of these delivered from PC world? Or same price else where?

This graphics card is not very good and if you are expecting to get the aero effects to run on Vista, you are going to be dissapointed.

I just ran the vista advisor on an 9550agp, and it will run vista, but not the fancy effects.
  • I have a nvidia 5200 128mb graphics card and vista worked fine on that, although I do also have a 19" LCD screen which makes things look alot better then a 19" CRT monitor, which my son currently has, these arent that priceses on ebuyer at the moment aroung 25-30 quid.

DO you think that this "nvidia 5200" with 128mb will run the fancy areo vista graphics?

According to the websites of both Microsoft and ATI and other places I read the 9550 should run Vista Aero.

Anyway, i just ran Vista Advisor on my NVidia Geforce 6200 which only cost me £25 (with DVI, DSub and TV Out) and that will "support the Windows Aero user experience"! My advice is don't waste more money than you need to on a graphics card unless you play 3D games.
